Here's a guest post from Casey Nelson (http://ltocambodia.blogspot.com) - a very topical story for this time of the year showing both the best and worst of life in the Kingdom.

I have to concur with digiboy there, good story. Happy new Year 2555 to you too.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Me too - an unfortunately all-too-common occurrence, but beautifully told and with a lovely resolution.
I came, I argued, I'm out

Fair enough, I didn't realize the Thais and Khmers were a year out of synch.andyinasia wrote:2556, LL.Lucky Lucan wrote:I have to concur with digiboy there, good story. Happy new Year 2555 to you too.

The Thais are the ones out of synch...their king in 1939 somewhat arbitrarily decided to change the year the Buddha reached enlightenment, haha. So Thai.
Great read and it is stories of the people helping the maid why I like it here.
"The thought of a couple of young city boys, probably middle classes or better..." these are the ones I don't like. I would replace those middle class and better with "richer" or "spoiled". I dislike their parents even more. After all this behavior is learned both at home and within their circle of friends, and is becoming or is part of the culture. If they see their father or friends profit from taking some poor peoples land, surely a maid is fair game for the up and coming rich punk kid.

Interesting, then Winkipedia has it wrong.preahkaew wrote:The Thais are the ones out of synch...their king in 1939 somewhat arbitrarily decided to change the year the Buddha reached enlightenment, haha. So Thai.
Cambodians also use Buddhist Era to count the year based on the Buddhist calendar. For 2012, it is 2556 BE (Buddhist Era).[1]
