Tried most of the local 'delicacies', from dog to turtle and of course the plate of entrails and offal so favoured by beer girls, but one of my students said cat is a real treat. Is he fucking with me?
Anyone sampled bbq moggy?

I've heard mixed opinion about cats, but then again I have never tried any of the 'exotic' meats you have eaten above.
Everyone bow down and pay extreme homage to his Majesty flying chicken.
I was offered cat just outside of Chhlong a couple of months back, but I didn't try it. I remembered reading or hearing somewhere that it could be dangerous to eat cat meat..(Something about parasites or viruses?) They all seemed to like it though. I asked if they usually ate cats and they said : nah, not often. When I asked why cat meat, they said : because it tastes great.
Alcohol is necessary so that a man can have a good opinion of himself, undisturbed by the facts

I think paddy field rats are eaten all over South-East Asia, so the only surprising part seems to be that they're exporting them to another country instead of eating them right away.flipflop wrote:Yeah, rats

The Aboriginies in Central Australia will cook a sand goanna or a perentie in an open fire and eat them. To my surprise, the perentie was like a gourmet meat, a cross between chicken and fresh water crayfish. So, the Viets might be on to something...Filofax wrote:Deep fried sand lizard seems to get Vietnamese palets going
rat is ok, the khmengrish word for it seems to be 'mause'. roasted on a stick, tastes like rabbit/squirrel.

I've never heard or seen anyone eating cat, and the only place I've personally seen rat being sold/eaten was Laos. Are you sure you don''t mean Civet Cat which is used in the Cantonese Dragon, Tiger and Phoenix dish. There is a dog restaurant near my house but when I asked them, all the family said there was no way they'd eat the stuff. I ate a tiny bit when I was drinking with some soldiers nearby a few months ago, just to taste it, didn't like it much at all.

Ordered "Duck a l'orange" in Vientiane. When it arrived , the half carcass had the front legs the same length as the back and very thin ribs, yup, cat. As a kid I was thought to suffer from bronchitis and always at the hospital with wheezy chest. Turned out I was allergic to my mums cat, so I eventually got my own back. Tasted pretty good, revenge is sweet!!!!
There are dog shops everywhere, never tried in PP, but at least 2 in Battambang within a few minutes of my house and 1 in Siem Reap.
I'm up for most things, but sampled;
prahok: foul stuff
mouse: rabbit
frogs: bad chicken
insects: bar nuts with wings
turtle eggs: raw and creamy
croc eggs: foul tasting mud
croc meat: nice
snake: chewy
turtle: 3 meals in 1, served in shell
offal/entrail mix: bar girl favourite
and also some whole, deepfried bird which may be dove or quail but called 'kroo ka coo' or something similar; lovely
