Went there for the first time a bit over a month ago. I had totally forgotten about this thread until they asked me to pay the white-man tax. Basically, it's not a "bad" deal. They simply force you to pay a "package" deal. Meaning, you have access to certain rides, or all rides, for free. For example, if you pay say, 7$, you can ride A, B, C, D, E, F and G rides for free (unlimited number of rides). If you pay 13$, you can ride all the rides in the park for free, as many times as you want. These package deals are available for khmers as well (I see Cambod posted the package deals). If you actually want to do lots of rides, it's a good deal (as most rides are what, 5000R?). But obviously, if you just want to walk around to check things out (as I did), it's a shit deal. I got a bit pissed and argued with the clerks and said I lived here. They asked if I had proof. I ended up showing an ATM card from a Cambodian bank and they let me pay the regular 2000R entrance fee. Voila.
So all the recent hate here is pretty much unwarranted. If you LIVE here and have proof, then it's a non-issue. DetroitM showed up like two weeks ago so I don't think he really qualifies yet, but either way: driver's license, ATM card whatever: normal fee.
/End Thread

It's very warranted.LexusSchmexus wrote:Went there for the first time a bit over a month ago. I had totally forgotten about this thread until they asked me to pay the white-man tax. If not warranted, why did you get "a bit pissed" when all you had to do is show your ATM card?
Duh.
There is an obvious reason you got pissed, and I shouldn't have to point it out.

My point is that the matter got sorted within 3 minutes, without me having to yell or curse at some random employee. Yes, of course I agree that they should properly train their staff to mention the policy/pricing options to foreigners straight up, or better yet, put up big signs regarding the "expat" rule. Regardless, I didn't have to throw a tantrum to get what I wanted.
3 minutes to get lucky. That's a long time. Good job either way. I think it's obvious they try to force you to buy a package and don't even mention the "show us your ATM card" until it's usually too late, if ever at all.LexusSchmexus wrote:My point is that the matter got sorted within 3 minutes, without me having to yell or curse at some random employee. The only reason I contacted them and encouraged them to reply here is because so many people have been showing up and have NOT been offered the options you so luckily were offered after 3 minutes of getting "pissed."
It's a shame Dream Land has handled this so poorly in the past (and very possibly the future) than SEVERAL expat families have left with a bitter taste in their mouths and have sworn to never return.
So, more than warranted, IMHO.
Mission accomplished! (Well, maybe. We'll have to wait for some more reports to come in.)

I guess this is an 8th reason to marry a Cambodian woman. Discount at Dreamland!Dream Land wrote: Base on our policy, all expats can't buy ticket as normal people unless they have resident identity; example, ATM of any bank in Cambodia, Driving license of Cambodia, ID card of your work place in Cambodia, or any document proof that you have signed married with Cambodian lady.

Maybe you guys want to try out the Twin Twister there.

Summary: A Khmer woman working for an NGO died in Calmette Hospital after being thrown off the Twin Twister. Early reports stated that she wore a safety device but they don't know why it didn't work. Also, Dream Land would not allow the media to enter the park.
The bottom link says that the lady failed to use the safety belt and and it was her own fault she died.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. What a pile of complete BS. Angkor Wat is not owned by the Sokha group, the ticket concession is run by them, quite a different thing. It's typical BS that you'd hear off barely-educated tuk-tuk drivers in Siem Reap, who will also "inform" you that the Sokha group is Vietnamese. You're a nice guy OD, but do us a favor and stop buying into opposition party crap. Angkor Wat isn't a "religious site" either, unless you're talking about Cambodian Hindus, who there couldn't be more than a handful of. It's what's known as a prasat, which basically means an old ruin. It's about as religious to them as the tree or stream that they give offerings to every now and again with their strange arrangements of joss-sticks, banana leaves, rice and sundry garbage. The vast majority of the thousands of Khmers I've talked to over the years have never even gone near the place, they'd rather go to the beach if they could afford it. I'm not trying to say that they aren't proud of it, but it's a site dedicated to Vishnu, and has fuck all to do with the later Buddhism that they adopted.shitegeist wrote:

It's rehab was funded by foreign governments... with the tax money of us foreigners... why don't foreigners get in for free? We already paid to fix it up.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

How dare you question OD's post? Orange Dragon is the leading reference on North Korean affairs, American foreign policy, laws in every single country as well as the foremost expert on all things Cambodia. He's also a retired general with years of battlefield experience, a historian, a psychologist, a veterinarian and an expert shoe maker. What he posts is never his opinion, but rather hard, simple FACTS. Do not question them.
Oh, he also knows a thing or two about IT and web design, but he admits it's not his area of specialty.

Not really, considering this happened to me over a month ago while the recent posts relate events which happened this week..cambod wrote:Mission accomplished! (Well, maybe. We'll have to wait for some more reports to come in.)

Could you break this down for me? I don't quite follow what you are trying to say..?LexusSchmexus wrote:Not really, considering this last over a month ago and the recent posts relate events which happened this week..cambod wrote:Mission accomplished! No, I was standing right next to her. The girl sold us tickets, it was only when some young khmer male staff said something as we were walking in that the drama ensued....gavinmac wrote:DM - Where were you when your girlfriend stepped up and bought the two tickets? Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.

Oh, and for the record, the only option I was given to prove I live in Cambodia was an official Cambodian ID card, which my girl said I can only get after living here for 5 years. Nothing was mentioned about ATM cards nor did anyone ask if me and the girlfriend were married....
