Pregnancy in Cambodia
Hey Guys, I married my wife from Takeo nearly 3 years ago and have been trying to get her here to Canada since. It's been a helluva runaround with Canadian immigration.
Anyway, she's pregnant now, with a girl at 5 months. Sira Merrill ------ is her name to be. =)
She will have our baby sometime, late August, in Cambodia.
Is there a particular hospital where you guys would suggest? I havent thought too much about it but by reading net and from what the ball n chain says, it makes it all pretty complicated.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Get a private suite at Calmette.

I mentioned Calmette to my wife and she said she doesnt want to go there due to it being 'government'. I assume she thinks its welfare but will mention 'private suite' if that makes a difference. Thanks Lucky.

It's normal for a family to accompany their relatives to hospital, especially for births and some of them will stay in the suite. The OP is in Canada. I don't understand this "go to Bangkok" business, is the woman supposed to go there and wait around a couple of weeks in a hotel until she goes into labor or something?

I'd assumed the OP was going to be returning for the birth of his child, the visa problems are for his wife going the other way. With that in mind, I assumed he would take her.

Word. I assume OP will be in Cambodia during the last few crucial weeks. Before last crucial weeks come, FLY to Bangkok with your wife and arrange for the family to come over land at your expense....... not that big of deal... but why would you not have the life you are bringing into this world born in Bangkok>???? I cannot comment on Singapore or Malaysia, but to me, fuck the family... this is your kid... go to Bangkok..... Put your foot down and damn what your wife says. This is the 1 case where you must do what is right... getting your child to be the best care that is available in the area...... who gives a fuck about what your wife or her family says..... even if your wife and her family are gone, he/she will be your kid forever...... If the wifey and her family have a problem, fuck em.... the health of your child trumps what they think.....BURLESQUE@SDHHOTEL wrote:I'd assumed the OP was going to be returning for the birth of his child, the visa problems are for his wife going the other way. Agree with LL, you can pay a few quid more and go to Ratanak or some of the other 'higher end' hospitals, but if there are any complications, she'll end up at Calmette anyway.
It is the same in the UK, you can pay a fortune for a private hospital, but anything beyond normal birth and they whisk you in an ambulance down to the nearest NHS hospital as they do have the best facilities by far.
Unless you've married some Okhna's daughter, I think you ought to stay in Cambodia and use a local hospital as Khmers do indeed love to be, and expect to be, surrounded by their family - before, during and after birth.

or put up the cash to go to Bangkok and not care about being "surrounded" by annoying in-laws and get your future child to be 10 times the level of care than in Cambodia....Spigzy wrote:Agree with LL, you can pay a few quid more and go to Ratanak or some of the other 'higher end' hospitals, but if there are any complications, she'll end up at Calmette anyway.

My Khmer female staff have had about 30 babies since I started working here about 5 years ago (not mine of course! ) - most of them at Calmette, and not a single problem. I've got friends in the UK and Singapore who've had '10 times the level of care' and very unfortunately lost a baby, and in one case nearly lost the mother in a private hospital before she was taken to the NHS.
I'm not denying that the care can be better, but sometimes shit happens anyway - if the wife is healthy, scans are healthy, then I don't see the point in adding more stress to the mother (itself dangerous) by taking her away from family on the off chance that something might go wrong during childbirth, which it often doesn't. There are some that don't mind being away from family of course, again I've got mates with Khmer wives who have done just that and were very happy.
I guess it comes down to the Op, the relationship with the family (annoying/not annoying) and the health circumstances of the mother and baby; if any any doubt, of course go abroad - else I'd go for Cambodia, which I am as it happens as my wife is also 3-4 months pregnant; but then I get on great with my family in-law and lived with them since arrival and both my wife and I are young, sprog looking good!

Well said, I think there are a few people on here who don't really understand much about the people.Spigzy wrote: I think you ought to stay in Cambodia and use a local hospital as Khmers do indeed love to be, and expect to be, surrounded by their family - before, during and after birth.

It works both ways. Is it better to be culturally sensitive to Khmers and have the family crowding round you in a country with an appalling level of medical care or is it better to be culturally sensitive to Canadians and have the baby away from the family in a country less than an hour away with world class medical facilities?
I think a few people are totally ass-whipped and need to learn to put their foot down and not acquiesce to the whims of people that believe the king's face magically appeared on the moon when he died.
