Cause for hope for Cambodian youth
Cause for hope for Cambodian youth
I'm usually a pessimist about the future of this country based on the state of education here, and other such development indexes, specifically relating to young Cambodians. But here's a story that makes me hopeful.
When I taught at a language school, I had maybe 10% of the students I taught I thought to be superstars with potential to do big things if they played their cards right. A couple of my former students have started their own little coffee tent on 51 in between 178 and 184. It's just a typical Bon Cafe thing (it's not the black stuff in a water bottle, it's actual coffee) but they've been in touch with me throughout the last months asking advice on how to start up a small business like this. I'm not in business, but I tried to steer them in the right direction. With help ($) from their parents, they were just able to start this past week.
These are good kids who have good heads on their shoulders. There's 4 of them and they're between the ages of 19-23, trying to do something smart. Certainly breaking the stereotype I have in mind of the usual well-off youth of Cambodia. So a shameless plug, if you're in the area, maybe you can buy a coffee from them. I'd like to see them do well.

Joke:
How many rich Khmer kids does it take to open a little coffee tent?
Let's hope they don't have to change a lightbulb, LoL. Never mind, tents don't even have lights.
JK, I wish them luck and will stop by when convenient!

Pontoon doesn't really qualify as "an office".Playboy wrote:That area is a two minute walk from my office, what is the coffee shop called ?Pecahead wrote:A couple of my former students have started their own little coffee tent on 51 in between 178 and 184. It's just a typical Bon Cafe thing
Those who begin coercive elimination of dissent soon find themselves exterminating dissenters. Compulsory unification of opinion achieves only the unanimity of the graveyard.

I hope it is to your satisfaction. Your staff will be very grateful if they do not have to walk the usual 7 minutes to your favourite coffee shop and then suffer your abuse for bringing back cold coffee.Playboy wrote:That area is a two minute walk from my office, what is the coffee shop called ?Pecahead wrote:A couple of my former students have started their own little coffee tent on 51 in between 178 and 184. I have done more business deals in bars, restaurants, clubs, casinos and hotels around the world than I have in boardrooms.OrangeDragon wrote:Pontoon doesn't really qualify as "an office".Playboy wrote:That area is a two minute walk from my office, what is the coffee shop called ?Pecahead wrote:A couple of my former students have started their own little coffee tent on 51 in between 178 and 184. So it's true then that you once "sealed a deal" at Sophies?Playboy wrote:I have done more business deals in bars, restaurants, clubs, casinos and hotels around the world than I have in boardrooms.OrangeDragon wrote: Pontoon doesn't really qualify as "an office".

You got hope for the Cambodian youth because after 35 years of “development” and hundreds of billions of Dollars of financial aid they are finally able to cook a cup of coffee ?????
Now that’s weird, don’t you think ?

Don't be a smartass. He's clearly more impressed they managed to set up a tent.Pain wrote:You got hope for the Cambodian youth because after 35 years of “development” and hundreds of billions of Dollars of financial aid they are finally able to cook a cup of coffee ?????
