I would agree seeing that the suicide followed an argument with the girl re his loss of employment. The loss of income most likely meant the loss of the girl. Not the first here and will not be the last guy to suicide over a girl. Nevertheless very sad. Condolences to family and friends.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Judging from the all the crazy posts his girlfriend was writing on his wall, his suicide may have had more to do than with just his being unemployed.BURLESQUE@SDHHOTEL wrote:Think this is him https://www.facebook.com/michael.mccann.35728
My condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, they will be the ones suffering now.

I knew Mike when he first arrived out here. In fact he was my flatmate for a few months. What I will say is that this country and being an expat had no bearing. He brought a lot of problems out with him and made a lot of mistakes but he's paid the price now. It's a sad story but this was a guy who was hanging on by a thread long before Cambodia stuck its claws in. If anyone wants to PM me then please do.
Sorry about indicating Teachers, but from what I had read on this Forum quite a number of posts looking for cheap did in fact come from Teachers, don't really care what their profession is I just get tired (or did)from reading posts, like how cheap can I live here, how much can I get by on,it seems a lot of Forums (and Countries) are also invaded by these people,do they think they can come to SE Asia and live the life without any decent job or savings,or just hoping they can.cambod wrote:LoL, I don't think it has much to do with teacher's salaries. Seems drugs (or some sort of substance abuse) are usually involved. I believe his friend already came on here and said he'd been on a downward spiral for a while now, and losing his good job (which I seriously doubt was a $10 an hour teaching gig) was the straw that probably broke the camel's back.intime wrote:...
A number of these people also seem to be employed as Teachers, are the wages that low that Teachers seem to struggle so much? I can't understand why anyone would want to live in what is pretty much a third World Country and struggle...
Also, it's no secret that Cambodia attracts the craziest of the crazies from around the world, so it's kind of a "what came first, the chicken or the egg" scenario.

Suicide is never the answer. 27 years old? Wow. That's a lot of good times he'll be missing out on.
If anyone is suicidal either now or in the future, please have a chat with a good friend or even a sympathetic stranger at the bar. Just don't do that. The guy's family back home must be devastated. What a waste.

I'd certainly lose some sympathy for the departed if he'd abandoned 2 young kids to fecklessly bounce around Phnom Penh on the piss.LTO wrote:I saw their photo, but didn't read the FB page. Wasn't aware that they were his kids. It would change my opinion of him some if they were.

If you click on the photo he says in the comments that they're his. An old work colleague of mine did the same thing with 3 kids at only a couple of years older. His ex took the kids and moved to the other end of the country and wouldn't let him see them. He got depressed, drank heavily and offed himself on his birthday. Bit difficult to judge him without knowing the back story.

There are probably a fair number of Western dudes in Cambodia who abandoned children back in their home countries, they just don't talk about it.
