Finding Denis Jones
Hello all,
I've be retained by the Jones family to look into the matter of the disappearance of their son, Denis. With the permission of the forum admin (thank you, keeping_it_riel), I can share a few facts with you, and also let you know that there are a few things you can do to help.
The family has in fact notified the UK constabulary, and the missing persons bulletin has been passed through to the FCO and then on to the embassy in PNH.
It's not clear at this point just what the embassy has done as far as involving the Cambodian authorities, but it's early days. Most will already know or at least suspect that the state of missing persons investigations by most Southeast Asian police forces is pretty woeful, and that foreign Embassies here can't do too much absent any evidence of a crime usually over privacy issues.
I can't offer anyone a theory of the case or engage in speculation. My duty of care to the Jones family and to Denis precludes that.
I also assure you that I'm greatly aware of Denis' interests as well, and that searching for a lost visitor who can fly home and escape embarrassment is not the same as searching for a missing expat.
The goal in crowd-sourcing some aspects of this investigation is a fairly simple one: as I'll be traveling to Cambodia soon to do the field work in this case, I want to arrive with as much information as possible. That will help to shape the investigation and set some priorities, and in turn help keep down the expenses for the Jones family.
There are a few things others can do to help this along:
First and foremost if you know anything about Denis' current location or recent movements, or other details about him and his doings, things that you are not comfortable posting to the forum, please contact me by email as per my profile. You may remain anonymous and this email account is seen only by me.
I'm also seeking information on a few other points:
- The name and contact information of his residential landlord, and his home address.
- The name and contact information of the landlord of the school.
- If there is anyone who is in Kampong Cham that could take a photo of the signage on the school building, especially anything that indicates a name of a legal business entity, it would be greatly appreciated if you could send that by email.
- Any details on a recent business partner whether in the school or another venture.
- Any details on disputes Denis may have had with others, whether Cambodians or foreigners, especially over issues of money, romance, or reputation.
- Whether or not Denis had any recent romantic involvements. And, not to cast aspersions, any history of compensated companionship especially if it was with the same provider.
- Whether or not Denis had his own vehicle, of what type, and whether it was something he owned or leased. If the name of the shop he leased it from was known, or a photo of the license plate, that could also be helpful.
- Whether Denis was known to over-indulge in drink or anything else, and if he was regularly taking medication for any medical condition.
- And anything else that you feel is important. There's no such thing really as a "bad lead", there are just items that are pertinent and items that are not. An investigator prefers to have more information rather than less. A report of an unconfirmed sighting is better than silence. It's in no way a waste of the investigator's time so please don't feel you have to be 100% certain on any fact before conveying it privately.
Thank you and let's hope we can figure this out soon, get Denis found and helped if he needs it, and get his family some peace of mind.

People have said he communicates by SMS usually. Can't they (you) get his SMS history through the proper channels? That could be most helpful.
I have heard about this but don't actually know the chap personally.
Compared to what I have heard your list of questions appears to be similar to what people have also been wondering so it looks like you have a good scope to begin with.
Kampong Cham is not so far from Phnom Penh but it isn't exactly a "go to" place for many foreigners. It is mostly a rural province with a small semi-urban centre (by local standards)
It is also one of the country's most populous provinces.
Hope you can shed some light on his disappearance, good luck!

If you want to jog peoples memories I suggest you furnish us with a little more info than "some bloke called Dennis". Name, age, nationality, recent photograph, etc etc. From the information provided so far there are two unusual things about this guy, the first is that he lives in Kompong Cham, the second is that he's missing, figuring out the reasons for one might help shed light on the other.
Secondly I wouldn't prevent people talking about him here, even speculatively. You'd be surprised what puzzles the 440 hive mind has solved through 30+ pages of bickering, off topic posts and other assorted nonsense.

I don't recall any at all; let's not get too high an opinion of ourselves. Our strong suit is bickering and nonsense, not solving anything.starkmonster wrote: You'd be surprised what puzzles the 440 hive mind has solved through 30+ pages of bickering, off topic posts and other assorted nonsense.

@ the OP:
Feel free to contact me when you arrive or by email. I worked with Denis for a bit at New World, but many other people have seen him more recently/know him better than I do.
I would suggest, though, that Hun Ben and ruralrage are your best bets, and that the latter you should contact when you get here.
Go to Kampong Cham and then start, this is deteriorating into personal ego stuff.Investigations in Cambodia are like job-hunting; not much happens over the internet, you have to be there.

I've tidied this thread up and Nightmare Believer can take a 48-hour rest from the forum.
The rest of you, just keep it civil: this is about Denis and his parents, not you lot.

A suggestion for the mods: Delete all the posts on here bar the OP, and put this as a sticky for a month or two to keep it to the top of the forum.
Let the other thread be the bickering thread, and let the guy here who has been given the role of finding Denis have the best possible chance of success without dickwaving and 440 nonsense muddying the waters.

We sorted out the Lazy Monk's death pretty quickly, especially for an event that the owner's paid off the locals and newspapers not to report on... I'm sure there are other mysteries that were solved on here too (maybe the final outcomes weren't posted publicly).
If I went missing I'd want you and Scooby on the case. I'd be located faster than hotdigger could buy and lose another bar.

MisPerAsia:
This is what I had written down in the other thread. There are maybe 4/5 users with clearer information.

So Keeping It Riel and Andy In Asia weren't in direct contact with him (as far as this post is concerned). Hope this is more on topic.Vladimir: I last bumped into him on the riverside a few weeks before he went up to KC, he was talking about the school
This was along time ago, maybe February.
LongTimeReader says: He was my best customer in battambang also, until him and bolton fell out over the some trivial shit ....
When I last saw him at the start of the year he was just about to open the doors of his school.
Birdbrain: When I saw him earlier this year he was within days of opening his new school. Literally days away
BirdBrain: I would be interested to know if the tobacco guys at Charlies bar in Kompong Cham know anything of his movements.
I last saw him in late June. Haven't been able to reach his phone though in months.
Falling out over what trivial shit exactly?
Being excited in opening up a new school would mean that he has no motive for doing any sort of runner.
Àfter conversing with longtimereader, he spoke with Penguint in august:
our last fb conversation was in august, we phoned a few times after that
But then, the second week of September-
Keeping It Riel: His last log in date was Tuesday 17th September which is getting on for three months ago
- Is that for Marwood and Uncle Monty?
Almost a week later, he updates his fb page of his school with promotions:
Also appears that the facebook page for the business has not been updated since 22nd of September
Two Days Later,
AndyinAsia states: He's been an active and successful player in our fantasy football league for years. This season he started off well then suddenly went inactive after 24th September
In the last week (assuming),
Rural rage states: I have passed his new school in Kampong Cham, which never opened for various reasons, and stopped by a couple of times in early or mid-November and talked with him. Lately, (within the last two weeks) the door has been padlocked which I assumed meant that he was on vacation.

Thank you for the positive contributions so far.
I had believed the forum users would be briefed on the situation from the prior thread. Apparently some have missed it. Please see http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/view ... =1&t=34667
