I remember when I was an Alcoholic.
Well, sometimes.
Well, sometimes.
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.
wait.........are alcoholics the people who drink
or the ones who don't........?
or the ones who don't........?
Forgive me for asking this question. But how does one really know if they have a drinking problem? I have heard people say that if you really need to drink then you have a problem. This is not really helpful. I could go a period of time without a drink but then would go back to drinking because I like the feel and the taste. There are a lot of enjoyable things in life I could avoid but why should I?
Since I came here I have been drinking more. In part because liquor is cheap here. Where I lived before they did not have western liquor. I do drink everyday. But I read drinking everyday is good for the health.
Lately I have been wrestling with this issue in my mind. Any experts on this subject?

Respect DM. Soon you'll be counting weeks and not days, then months and not weeks.
Good luck DM.
FYI - Maybe you get offensive while you are (as you say) "at your worst". I don't recall you ever being rude or offensive those few times I've been around you at Garage, so no apology needed from me.

We never met as I am new to this forum, but 28 is a young age to develop that level of self-awareness and young enough to reverse the regrets you have. Good luck with your lifestyle change.

DM, apart from better health, what are you going to do with all that spare cash?
Good luck to you and well done.
If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

A very valid question.Frank4 wrote:Forgive me for asking this question. But how does one really know if they have a drinking problem? I have heard people say that if you really need to drink then you have a problem. This is not really helpful.
I used to think that not being able to go without drinking meant you had a problem with alcohol. That (in itself) just means you're addicted to alcohol. Nothing more, nothing less.
As DM describes it, alcohol has ruined many aspects of his life for a decade or so. That's totally different.
I think it's kind of hard to imagine the extent of it for people without that problem or for people who haven't known anyone close with that problem.
Throughout my life I don't think I've ever been close to anyone who's actually had the kind of drinking problem DM has described.
I give him mad props for realizing that the ONLY solution is being 100% sober and acting accordingly.
I'm guessing we've all had times when we might have been a little more rowdy than normal while drinking heavily, or maybe went through a small period of time, like over a summer break or something, where you thought, "damn, I've been drinking a lot lately, I probably shouldn't keep this up for very long," but none of that compares to what DM is on about.
Did I mention I'm NOT a doctor?
Nice hat you were rocking last night.
I'm not stalking you btw.

Massive stalker
True alcoholism is an addiction --- you have trouble functioning or at least feeling content without a drink.
Many more people are what medical professionals call "Binge Drinkers" -- which supposedly has serious health implications over time.
The medical definition of "Binge Drinking" is 5 or more drinks in any session.
I suspect a lot of us meet this condition.

I'm not a doctor either, but I believe one can be a regular drinker if he/she can maintain a stable life.cambod wrote:A very valid question.Frank4 wrote:Forgive me for asking this question. By that I mean holding a regular job, having a healthy family life, being in a stable relationship without too much verbal abuse, let alone physical abuse.
It's all about the individual person, and how he/she can handle alcohol/drug usage.
Personally, I've been a regular drinker for 28 years. I've had ups and downs during that time because of personal things that have happened to me, but have always tried to be a functional drinker. By that I mean getting to work on time, and doing my job to the best of my capabilities, busting a gut to do a good job for the people I worked for.
Since moving to Asia however this has changed for me. Not enough things to keep me busy, boredom, personal problems and booze being too cheap, has put me in a cycle that requires me to drink to get to sleep at night.
But hey, we're all different, we can all realise if we have a problem or not.
Personally, for myself I've been thinking for years to do the rehab thing, alcohol is now the no1 problem in my life. If I don't address the problem straight away if fear it I'll be the end of me very soon.
My abuse of alcohol has cost me so much, a marriage break up, lost contact with my daughter for over 10 years, the list goes on and on. And I'm not blaming anything or anyone besides myself!
To get to the point of my ramblings...it's ok to have a drink or 6, as long as it doesn't control your life and you can have nights that you can go to sleep without thinking : shit I need a drink.
Over and out.
