The Legend of the Aap
New on the #K440 front page, Pedro takes a look at the headless monster of Khmer villages, the Aap.

As a fairly educated Khmer said to me, as I was researching the topic “How can something known to so many people in different countries not be real?”
Thinking Charles Mackay may be on to something...
"Men it has been well said think in herds, it will be seen they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one."

Never mind.

Many years ago, in some of the most remote part of Mondolkiri, I and two others saw and spoke to what can only be a white lady.
she advised us not to enter a remote forest and to drive back 30km to the last village were another road was (whereas we were following an ho chi Minh trail on a 68 US navy map).
We did as told and when I looked back she was gone with no tree to hide.
We were sober and my friend vietnamese Gf didn't speak a word for the next two days.
Today I can still get the chills thinking about it.
I tend to think that if you are living in a city you won't see or believe in ghost but villagers will know better.

That is a creepy experience especially when there were 3 of you to witness that.
I've had similar 'experiences' that I put down to personal grief (the death of a loved one) so I do tend to sit on the fence with apparitions. It's well reported throughout the ages, some chilling, some not.

I like that painting of the Aap. Who is the artist?
Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

I believe in them.Barang_doa_slae wrote:I tend to think that if you are living in a city you won't see or believe in ghost but villagers will know better.
I find it amusing that Christian churches, for example, (and maybe other religions) would pooh-pooh the idea of local rural types seeing ghosts, but expect followers to believe in The Holy Ghost, The Devil and demons

Arb also do not have passports, hence explaining why they are not found in Europe or America, etc.

Dunno, but it was the poster for a Thai movie called "The Ghost of Valentine's."MoodyMac wrote:I like that painting of the Aap. Who is the artist?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I had an idea for a hit single based on the Legend of the Arb and got this catchy tune in my head - appreciate any feedback on whether you guys reckon it might be a money spinner?!
Ghost goes woo, ghoul goes ow.
HunSensEye goes tweet and skeleton goes creak.
Phantom goes moo-ha-ha. Zombie goes croak, and the owl goes toot.
Witches cackle and the Blob goes blub, and the victim goes OW OW OW.
But there's one sound that no one knows...
WHAT DOES THE Arb SAY?
Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!
Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!

WHAT THE Arb SAY?
Big brown eyes, stubby nose, chasing Khmers, and eating offal.
Tiny glow, up the hill, suddenly you're floating still.
Your entrails red, so beautiful, like an angel in disguise.
But if you meet a friendly corpse, will you communicate by mo-o-o-o-orse, mo-o-o-o-orse, mo-o-o-o-orse?
How will you speak to that c-o-o-orpse, c-o-o-orpse, c-o-o-orpse?

The secret of the Arb, ancient mystery.
Somewhere deep in the woods, I know you're hiding.
What is your sound? Will we ever know?
Will always be a mystery what do you say?
You're my guardian angel hiding in the woods.

the version I was told was that they glow red (i'm guessing, airplane lights in the distance?).
also, when traveling at night, bring a stick, preferably one with thorns, and they will run away from you.
they don't like getting poked in the organs.
i've never understood why they get scared of aap. no arms, exposed organs? easy win for me.
