Buying backpacker odds and ends Cambo or Thailand
Hi folks
First time poster here but looking for some cool advice from you folks in the Penh if that is the term !
I looked on LP but they don't appear to have the local knowledge hoping you can help or suggest any other site ( as well as Thailand) ?
Pretty inexperienced on travelling, 23 year old bloke from the UK looking to take 6 months out and tour Asia - 1st stop Cambodia.or Thailand.
Will be doing it on a tight budget but just wanted to know the local costs of these items I'm guessing will save a few quid.
Teva Sandals (can be knock off cheaper the better)
Back Pack around 50 litres
Compass
Face paint ( for camouflage)
Small camping cooker ( single burner)
Hunting / Combat knife ( hope to do some jungle treks up in the North East looks cool)
Bandana/ sweatband
Wristies
Headlight
Drinks Bottle insulated
Lightweight sleeping pack
Lightweight hammock for those nights in the jungle
Poncho
Fisherman pants - 2 pairs cotton or nylon.
Should do me for now - from what I have gleaned costs are lower than Thailand - am I right ?
I will be back later with some questions once I planned my route on transport costs etc.
Thanks in advance for your help.

excuse me for offtopic, but are you seriously considering jungle trekking in Cambodia? Have you read about land mines or the foreigners death rate here?
But i guess that is where the rate comes from: clueless backpackers thinking it would be cool to go hiking in Cambodian jungle
Those items might be cheaper here than in Thai, if you find them. As you probably don't know camping and hiking are not common things people do here
Maybe look at going trekking in the search for king Athurs tomb - will be million times safer

This has to be a piss take. I was suspicious until the camouflage and then was convinced.

"Cambo"? "The Penh"? WTF?
Anyway, assuming you are not taking the piss and just dumb, here some advice:
Teva Sandals (can be knock off cheaper the better) Completely wrong! Never go cheap on footwear, you do not want to be standing in the middle of a forest, or a town for that matter, and your shoes are coming apart.
Compass Why would you need a compass?
Face paint ( for camouflage) Camouflage from what? The hookers? They'll find you anyway.
Hunting / Combat knife ( hope to do some jungle treks up in the North East looks cool) Assuming you don't step on a mine, what would you hunt/fight with a knife? Have you ever handled a knife or hunted? And no, watching Bear Grylls does not count.
Fisherman pants - 2 pairs cotton or nylon. God forbid

A compass might come handy... When you ain't a backpacker...
Ex: 3 days ago, while driving my Cambo car in Bangkok rush hours my iPad battery died, no more google map. I had to use my mirror integrated compass to find my bearing

I'd give the face paint a miss as there's everything you need in the jungle for camouflage ;

You can buy bandanas everywhere in the region but i would consider buying a pair of these to be on the safe side to protect the eyes from debris ;

PS, if whilst out in the boonies you get your legs blown off after 3am and manage to crawl your way out you might get sent to a tinpot clinic and have to wait until sunrise for a doctor to turn up to give you some morphine as the guy holding the fort at the clinic could be worried about your medical history and allergic reactions with other possible medications.
...So i'd also arrange an air lift out to Thailand to be on the safe side. Mediiiiiiic !!!

I couldn't tell. I almost didn't approve the thread.backhome wrote:This has to be a piss take. I was suspicious until the camouflage and then was convinced.

Interestingly enough, the barang death rate here has absolutely nothing to do with land mines. Not once in the history of mankind (OK, since 1990 anyway) has a white face been injured by a Cambodian land mine. Fact. Amazing but true.bauerin wrote:excuse me for offtopic, but are you seriously considering jungle trekking in Cambodia? Have you read about land mines or the foreigners death rate here?

The OP is obviously taking the piss. "Penh"? Camo face paint? Anyone - even a 12 year old boy know that all this stuff is cheaper in SE Asia than in the UK. Fooled again - you gullible nice chaps on k440!
