Charlène Savarino sentenced to 25 years.
A French friend (I try not to have too many of those) just put me on to this. Seems Charlène Savarino got 25 years.

South China Morning Post: http://www.scmp.com/news/asia/article/1 ... -smugglingSavarino had been asked by her boyfriend to smuggle the heroin to Australia.
...
The court also sentenced Savarino’s boyfriend, Precious Chneme Nwoko, 23, of Nigeria, to 27 years in prison.
Pardon my engrish, thanks you.
I dont know the ins and outs of the case, but having seen her Facebook page - complete with pictures of her bigging it up with her African mates in Pontoon, pretending to be a gangster's moll - I always got the impression she did this more for the excitement rather than for financial gain. It feels like she was out for a lark.
If that's the case, then she is a very very stupid girl. 25 years. That's the best years of her life condemned to festering away in a Cambodian prison. A life totally and utterly destroyed.

"They were accused of trying to smuggle 2.2 kilos of Heroin into Australia. Three foreigners, including a French woman, have been sentenced for drug trafficking on the 28th of May in Cambodia, with sentences ranging from 23 to 27 years.
The 19-year old French woman, Charlene Savarino, and a 41-year old Australian woman were arrested in September 2013 at the Phnom Penh airport with a backpack containing the drugs.
The fight against drugs intensifies in Cambodia.
During the court process last months, the women denied being owners of the bag. They insisted that it belonged to a Nigerian, the friend of the French girl, who was also sentenced and who intended to pass the drugs to an unidentified man in Australia.
In the past few years, Cambodia has intensified its war on drugs, arresting hundreds of people, including ring leaders. The country has become an important thoroughfare for drugs in the region, especially after the violent repression (of drugs) in neighboring Thailand at the beginning of 2000.

Was it a setup? I've never seen them checking luugage @ Pochentong, I've never seen any dogs as well..... Or did they carry the drugs in their carry-on luggage?Hanno wrote:"They were accused of trying to smuggle 2.2 kilos of Heroin into Australia. .
I think they were under investigation for a while Kachang, and from memory the two women were arrested enroute to the airport, not at the airport itself. The Australian woman had also done this a couple of times before. There is no suggestion of a set-up.
Sometimes I think we have to give credit to the local police for doing a good job, instead of seeing setups and conspiracies everywhere.

There's at least one dog, I've seen him at the security check right after immigration at the departure terminal. An old, adorable Cocker Spaniel if I'm not mistaken. I told the customs officers there to contact me if they retire him.Kachang wrote:Was it a setup? I've never seen them checking luugage @ Pochentong, I've never seen any dogs as well..... there's no way on earth I could (or would) do 20+ years in a Cambodian prison.
I feel for her family.
What a tough way to learn a very hard life lesson. I wish her strength.

It's very unfortunate and they probably got used and caught in this trouble (transporting a parcel as a favor for a "boyfriend"), but better in Cambodia than in Thailand or Singapore. Though, isn't it possible that they strike a deal to spend time in prison in their home countries?

The Aussies tipped off the authorities; saves them a few hundred thousand Dollars....

What do you mean 'they got used and caught in this trouble'?
Are you suggesting they are somehow victims? The Australian woman has admitted to smuggling drugs from Cambodia to Australia before. The gang were arrested based on tip-offs from the Australian authorities. Charlene, while young, is a grown woman capable of making her own decisions and it appears likely that she knew exactly what she was doing.
