Siem Lovely Reap
I just spent 4 days up there for a friends Birthday 2 weeks ago.ricecakes wrote:Pub Street and it's surrounds ABSOLUTELY DESTROY phnom penh's offerings. Actually....it is now clear to me how embarrassingly SHIT PP non-existent entertainment districts are. We ate ate Red Piano last night and then drank round after round of cocktails at the delightful Miss Wongs and finished up eating banana and chocolate pancakes in the rain. Walking around Pub Street reminded me of the back sois of Kao San road. Cool bars and cafes, live music, happy people. A
Stayed at Golden Banana Resort where the party was. Great rooms and food and location. Would stay there again.
Part of Celebrations was a dinner at fabulous villa http://www.villanisay.com/ with stunning food by Cuisine Wat Damnack.
Miss Wongs and bars around Passage and Alley west are good and I like the laundry Bar but Pub street its self is absolute shit especially the cross fire of competing crap music from Temple bar and Angkor Wat bars. There is no where to go late a to go night.
Ricecakes you need to get out more often in Phnom Penh, too many weekends in the ricefields mate! Who needs entertainment districts when the city is so compact and easy to get around. Pub street reminds me of Koa San Road too but not in such fond terms as yours.

I am very much mistaken. But I did used to teach a kid whose dad owns a fleet of luxury passenger boats in Myanmar, including an old wooden charmer. I think he may have one or two in Cambodia as well, he certainly does own one of the 5 star boats plying the Mekong in Laos these days...RainMan wrote:From Halong Bay in the 80's, about 30 odd junks there at the time.Falcon Randwick wrote:I used to teach the son of the owner of that boat which plies the Irrawaddy, unless I'm very much mistaken...

Classic stuff !Falcon Randwick wrote:Incidentally, it was in Siem reap that I was paid for my studly attentions to a chubby Italian backpacker. As she was leaving for the airport after three days of "tour guiding" and "entertainment" she dropped a Benjamin on my bedside table while I was lying half naked on the bed smiling up at her like a good little whore. I was somewhat surprised, to say the least. It's not like it was hard work, she spent half of her time sucking my dick.
in 15 years I went 5 times only to SR:
1st time in 98/99 as a tourist, when I extensively visited the temples. Town looked like an western movie stage.
2nd time in the early 2000 as a dirt bike R&R coming from koh ker, preah kan, preah vihear along veng... Needless to say we already had our fill of temples visits but drank quite a few needed cold beers at the Zanzibar.
The 3rd time in 2003/4 I was touring my parents and rediscovered the temples with new eyes thanx to the french university Cambodian studies I had since completed. That was also a brilliant time to visit as we were in the midst of the SRARS crisis. Emptiness reminded me of my late 90's first visit.
4th visit around 2009 lasted only a few hours. We had left SHV at sunrise, retrieved a stolen car near the new market by mid afternoon. As I needed a party and some company, I drove straight back to PP after a dinner at Le Malraux.
5th and last was this year as an overnight stay with all my inlaws on our way to O'smach. I was shocked when I managed to loose my bearings while driving from our hotel looking for pub street, even more shocked to see what the all block had changed into with foot massage armchairs down the sidewalk, fish foot cleaning aquarium etc. It was also the first time I could see that most of the tourists strolling the walking streets where Asians.
On a side note I can't believe it's now been almost 5 years that I have a Kh ID and that I still not have managed to try getting in the complex for free
Also I could never see myself living in SR, it would be like living in a ski resort or a touristic beach resort town whereas IMO SHV has a real city feeling (adding crazy or whatever nasty adjective is ok if you prefer so ).
Last time I was there I thought the restaurants in Pub St had turned to shit. One could get bored there very quickly I think.
I understand Ken Svay, let's bump this thread then, before it goes out of top40.

Lots of really good restaurants have sprung up elsewhere in the last couple of years. And my days are way too short to get bored.

I quite enjoy Siem Reap. Like anywhere with enough expats living there, there was a good crew of locally based people whom I knew that were a lot of fun to hang out with. Don't know if I'd choose to live there over Phnom Penh though.
Fond memories of crawling up the stairs at angkor wat in 2004. A few months ago i went to banteay srey which was nice. I think i´ll leave it at that because the gooseskin i had when i took the first glipse of angkor wat will turn into anger if i go there again. Petra was nice just three years ago and the town (Wadi Musa?) that was closeby had that old siem reap feel to it.
Hey it's a lovely getaway in my view, as for the Red Piano, I was as much entertained by the charming cuties working there, as for the quiet setting on the corner, I like Pub Street in the morning actually, more than the evening where it gets crowded. Was I filthy rich, I'd fly up there right now for some fresh air actually.
As for that croc restaurant, I would probably never bring my kids to a place like that and have them play around without close supervision, if at all.

I really like Siem Reap, I have only visited twice, so far but plan to visit again soon and have it at the top of my list to settle there, in the near future. Work wise, I think there is a niche supplying training to some of the service industry businesses.
I found everyone there very friendly, khmer and ex-pats alike. A cold beer in Home Cocktail, at the end of a hot day, always a nice friendly crowd. Nimol has moved on now, I understand but I am sure it is still a nice place.
It seemed totally different to both PP and Snooky, but each to their own. I liked its laid back feel and could see it being home for a good few years, in the not too distant.
It seems you can walk or cycle and be out and about in just a few Km. That appeals to me , with the odd cold beer en-route.

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

I am beginning to think I am a jinx to popular threads, another one goes quiet after my post

Ha ha, freaks? The concentration of freaks is an order of magnitude higher on the Riverside. All the long term freaks in SR couldn't fill a single PP bar.Hanno wrote:Pub Street has always been shit and I only go their to take photos of the freaks peopling it.ken svay wrote:Last time I was there I thought the restaurants in Pub St had turned to shit. Siem Reap is a great tourist town. As a tourist in both initially, the attitude of Phenom Penh guesthouse and store owners was one of ambivalence or annoyance when one asked for any assistance. Aside from a few restaurants, nothing in PP is worth wasting your time *as a tourist* anyway. Genocide porn museums get pretty trite, the various palaces are nothing on Bangkok or elsewhere, and the town itself is filthy and most of the interesting architecture has been lost.
I will admit there are too many fairly bland large restaurants around SR's Pub St. though. The sheer abundance of good restaurants in town that are within walking distance - usually along the attractive river - more than make up for that.
