I am reading now on Facebook that there was a "promotion" or amnesty period until April 30 where people could apply for or renew work permits and not be assessed fees for past years, but that this promotion has expired and now they are assessing fees for past years again.

Correct, there was an extension to apply for the 2017 WP until 30th April, with no fines charged for past years that you did not hold a WP. Pretty sure it was discussed in another post?gavinmac wrote:I am reading now on Facebook that there was a "promotion" or amnesty period until April 30 where people could apply for or renew work permits and not be assessed fees for past years, but that this promotion has expired and now they are assessing fees for past years again.
I'm not a negative person, I encourage people all the time...it's usually to f**k off! But, whatever.

Yea there was an official announcement before. I'll try to find it tomorrow. For what it's worth, I have heard they're going around different companies and checking any foreign staff's documents. They give a couple days heads up though so they can get the passports ready; it's not a surprise visit.PSD_Kiwi wrote:Correct, there was an extension to apply for the 2017 WP until 30th April, with no fines charged for past years that you did not hold a WP. I wonder how many people actually benefited from this "amnesty"? I figured it was just a ruse to get stragglers out of the woodwork. Nobody ever got a work permit processed in a month so I wouldn't be surprised if a whole load of people who went for that option get stung over the next while.gavinmac wrote:I am reading now on Facebook that there was a "promotion" or amnesty period until April 30 where people could apply for or renew work permits and not be assessed fees for past years, but that this promotion has expired and now they are assessing fees for past years again.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
As long as you APPLIED for it by the end of the April you weren't fined for previous years, it was not a ruse to catch people out.

What are the logistics of this, can you actually get a work permit if you are not employed by a company in Cambodia?

If the Cambodians are so greedy why not allow self-employed folks to apply for work permits and just collect their money?vladimir wrote:I doubt it.
They have to sign and stamp the book log.
No employer = blank space
