Never mind.

Neither does anyone. Sambo is trying to restore those posts. Give him time. He has a lot of work on managing the tech transfer and, of course, he's on the other side of the world right now. We are doing everything we can.

You sure the third partner isn't German?
Germans buying heritage British brands and retaining their 'Britishness' is tres vogue right now.
Or maybe the third partner is Chinese - which will mean the site turns into a bloated, sluggish, chintzy shadow of its former self*
* that one's for you your lordship. Beer's on you you tonight and sincere congratulations to all.

Congrads and great first post ( the little other ones don't count)scobienz wrote:Thanks for the messages, guys, and thanks to KiR for making the announcement and for a decade or more of extraordinary effort in creating without doubt the most engaging, informative, entertaining and - at times - infuriating site I've ever been involved in, and certainly the best expat-oriented site in this part of the world. I'm not sure if people realise the amount of time and effort that KiR has put into K440 over the years. We all owe him a debt of gratitude and I personally wish him well in the future.
KiR mentioned that I am the new owner. Just for the record, there are three of us. The venerable and much esteemed Playboy has a stake in K440 and we have been joined by 'the third man' who, for reasons I totally respect, wishes to remain a silent partner for now. What I can say is that he is an expat businessman resident in Cambodia, a long time lurker on 440 and not previously linked to 440 mods or admin but quite familiar with internet ventures.
There has been a lot of discussion recently about whether the forum would take a new direction under new ownership. That is absolutely not the case. I have invested in 440 for two key reasons: the first is that it has the potential to be an excellent business opportunity, and the second is that I have a genuine regard for it and didn't want to see it change too much. I most definitely don't want it to lose its edginess. It is that what makes it so entertaining. We will be looking at making some tweaks though, but I hope they would be seen as positive rather than negative. One of our immediate priorities is to do something the mods have been talking about for a long time, and that is to develop some posting guidelines. These aren't intended to be overly restrictive; instead we want a bit more transparency and consistent enforcement about what is and what isn't acceptable. These guidelines will go hand in hand with us developing some associated moderating / admin guidelines. Many posters have commented that there is a lack of consistency applied in moderating, and I think that's a fair comment. Hopefully posting rules and mod guidelines will give us all a greater sense of clarity.
We'll also likely to create new sections and hopefully some more technical features (when we can get scoffer to learn how to turn on his laptop) to improve the 440 experience, and - to answer someone's - comment, the old girl might benefit from a lick of paint also. I will be in touch with all the front page authors too, hoping they continue to feed us excellent stories as before.
Playboy, third man and I will be meeting next week to put some flesh on the bones of these plans. We'll keep you informed. We would also welcome any suggestions you guys have for improvements / enhancements you would like to see.
A quick word about the moderation team. The existing team, without exception, do a fantastic job, and I hope they are happy to carry on under the new management team. I would certainly like them to. We will also be asking a couple of extra people to join the moderation team to share the workload.
A word too, about CEO. The last few months have been marked by an unnecessary and undignified spat with former members who have created what is, after all, a direct competitor to K440. I've consistently said that there is room for both, and I hope now we can all put that bad feeling behind us. 440 and CEO should complement and compete with each other, not fight and feud. Friendly rivalry is fine; resentment and rancour is damaging to both sides. OD's gesture last night of coming here to wish the new management team luck, and our welcome to him is, I hope, a sign of things to come. I'm also acutely aware that many members on OD's site migrated there originally after being banned from here. I personally would be happy to see those members back if they wish. I am delighted to see Garry Crabtree on this thread. I hope he stays.
A final note. I understand that a couple of early responses to this thread were deleted and at least three accounts of relatively long-standing members deleted. This had nothing to do with the new management team and is, indeed, directly contrary to what we have already discussed in principle as some of the new moderating guidelines mentioned above. We are trying to see what we can do technically to restore those accounts as quickly as possible.
Thanks all.
so will those banned be granted amnesty?
hope we can retain the charm (yes charm) of the old days
while moving forward at the same time

Well done, KiR, even though we had our disagreements.
Good to see you doing a great job, scobie. Ah, first Scobie and now The Third man - your love of Graham Greene does you proud. Good luck!

Believe it or not, I never thought of that connection, and the name wasn't my idea.

Well, isn't this a nice little hand-holding Kumbaya session. I hope we don't get back ALL of the banned cunts. We were well rid of racist/anti-Semitic idiots like Jonnopfc, for example. Must we suffer through another round of their posts before they inevitably cross the line and get rebanned?
jonnopfc has already created a new account and has two posts pending approval. He was before my time so I'm not aware of his 440 history although I'm aware he lasted barely a week on the other forum. I've asked for input from the other mods / admin and we will go with whatever the majority view is. I'm aware that some of those banned in the past have been banned for very good reasons, and should likely stay so. I'm also aware that some of those banned before were banned for more personal reasons; those are the people I would love 440 to reengage with.

Well welcome to the back benches KiR, you have passed the baton after your watch and can now sit back and spend time on K440 enjoying the banter and not need to spend time policing it. The very best of luck in your new and future ventures.
Scobienz, congratulations on taking the helm, along obviously with Playboy and the new mysterious one. Maybe his anonymity is a small matter or maybe it is a cavernous one, who knows. What everyone knows is it is a new brush and already, I, for one, applaud you, PB, OD and The General, to take the opportunity to extend the hand of friendship and build bridges.
A new chapter, a new era

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

Yes, by all means reinstate those who were banned for personal reasons. But clearing out the trash like that idiot made the site much better in my opinion. Leopards don't change their spots.scobienz wrote:jonnopfc has already created a new account and has two posts pending approval.
