Ideas for improving 440
Ideas for improving 440
Now that the dust is settling on the handover, I want to to start thinking of ways to make 440 - particularly the all-important forum - even more entertaining and informative than it currently is.
Part of that is in the way the forum is managed, and I've already mentioned we are currently preparing some guidelines on this. Another part, though, is structural. I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on what we could do to improve this.
I've often felt the current structure of just a few 'sections' has outlived its shelf-life and that we need more sections to make vast amounts of material easier to find. For example, 'Lifestyle' seems a bit of a catch-all to me, and wonder whether we would benefit from having one on 'eating and drinking' in which new restaurants, bars etc are discussed, while more generic lifestyle issues are left behind.
The same applies to the Business forum. Again, it's too vague a title, and I think we have enough existing threads and potential new threads to split off a 'money and finance' thread in which things like costs, banking, insurance etc are covered.
Do we have enough posts about, and posters from, Sihanoukville and / or Siem Reap to have seperate forums on what's happening there?
Should there be an entirely separate section devoted to new sections like 'Health' for example.
Should there be a separate section entirely devoted to vlad where he can post his puns without anyone else having to suffer from them? Indeed, should we build a new tool into the site where vlad thinks he is posting, can see his own posts on the forum on his own laptop, but they're entirely invisible to everyone else?
If you could make changes to 440, what would you do? Give us your ideas. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Management by consensus never works when the proletariat is incredibly diverse.
You have opened a real can of worms here.
First, decide your focus or target market and work from there.

Personally, I really don't like the front page layout. When you pull up khmer440.com, the top of the front page shows the same rotation of photos from stale front page articles, some of which are many months old.
If there are new articles, they are buried mid way down the page. You have to scroll down "below the fold," in newspaper terms, to see if there are new articles, which many people aren't going to do.
I think the headlines of front page new articles should be at the top of the front page, regardless of the quality of the photos for those articles.

I'm not proposing management by consensus. As a manager of staff I know that I don't have all the best ideas. I constantly ask my staff what they think. It doesn't mean I will do everything they suggest. Similarly, good businesses prosper by getting feedback from their clients.
If seeking feedback on ways to enhance the 440 experience is opening a can of worms, then I'm happy to do that and will continue to do it until I run out of can openers.

Scooby, isn't what you're proposing re. the restructuring somewhat close to what CEO has (minus the private mongers part)?
Since both forums have simultaneously lost their heads, I expect CEO will die a death and all those previously banned from here will return, so you might as well bring the nuts and bolts over with the flotsam and jetsam - Chuang2U could build a small plane out of it.

I came, I argued, I'm out
I'm not proposing anything andy. Those were just 'off the cuff' suggestions which might or might not be valid. I'm conscious though that we have tends of thousands of threads and a half million or more posts crammed tightly into a relatively small number of sections. I'm wondering if that makes it hard to find really valuable material (yes, I know there is a search function) and also whether the lack of other sections inhibits posting.andyinasia wrote:Scooby, isn't what you're proposing re. the restructuring somewhat close to what CEO has (minus the private mongers part)?

It's a discussion.
I get a sense 440 hasn't particularly welcomed feedback etc before, and I don't know why. I'd like to hear what people think.

I've always had the impression that Speakeasy is always the liveliest forum, and people often post there rather than in more appropriate forums because they know they'll get more response. If you expand the forums you need to ensure new ones aren't neglected.
Personally I'd welcome your idea. There are whole areas of life that I have no interest in, such as food & drink, drugs, shopping for grommets or pot pourri and 'couples dancing' (posted a few minutes ago), so dividing up topics would make it easier for me to surf 440 for the topics I am interested in.
I also think GM raises an important point.
