Cambodia Public Bank stopped doing 10,000s for a while and only had 20,000 and 50.000. Now they do 10,000s too again. I got 300,000 out yesterday to pay an electric bill and I got a stack of 30 notes. They also stopped doing any dollar bills smaller than $50.CambodiaMarcel wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 12:53 am
Nowadays, the KHR 50,000 bill is the only denomination you can get when withdrawing Riels from an ABA ATM. They used to have KHR 10,000 notes also, but not any more
Do Khmer people hate their riel currency?

I only use u.s. dollars for online purchases connected to my u.s. dollar account. All other spending, rent paying, etc, I do in local riel currency withdrawn from my riel account. This is the easiest way to live here, especially if shopping for food, etc...
However, am concerned about the 28 trillion dollar American debt. What will happen to the value of currency against the dollar if the U.S. system implodes after October 18?
(BTW, who pays more than a dollar for beer in a bar here in Cambodia? Why would you pay $2.75 for a beer, as one poster Gavinmac mentioned on the previous page? Unless you are like, really rich? But then you wouldn't be here, you would be some place like the Maldives, Mauritius, the Seychelles. Just don't get why there are any foreign rich guys here in Cambodia at all... How odd... Yeah, and I tried to get a job in perfect Micronesia, too, but they only take Americanos...)

If you are paying 2.75 for a draft beer then, unless it is some craft stuff, you aren't paying 2.75 for the beer. You are paying a dollar for the beer and 1.75 for the location.

Sometimes, from campubank, I get 10,000 riel denominations and at other times it's only 50,000.
It really seems to depend how they choose to stock the atm machines.
Yes, for $, it's only 50s or 100s.
They seem to be making cash so inconvenient, by dribs and drabs, that we will all get fed up and give in to their desire for a cashless society. And we all know what that would mean ...

@ Orichá . Good point:

If you'r e not totally blind you will see that the trajectory of the USD looks like an arch, and pointing downward. How long can you abuse the Money Press to print out something so obviously overvalued ? Efforts by many states to dedollarize are already taking place (BRICS)

But back to the subject. Khmer don't have problems with the Riel. Only the rich getting stashs of USD in hundred dollar bills have problems carrying their load to the bank. As a foreigner i actually prefer to pay in KHR for may daily purchases. Sure, i would pay a new moto in USD but only because i need less paper.

Yeah the money here is horrible. Any note not in mint condition is frowned upon or rejected. Smaller dollar notes are gone and a lot of Riel are too dirty to touch...
On top of that they banned crypto which I personaly would like to use. Sure it is fun investing but being able to spend it helps adoption.
I not trust the banking system here. We once sent money to a wrong ABA account (there is no name/number check) and the cost to resolve it was higher than the amount sent. In the West it sucks too but at least your funds are insured to some level if a bank fails. But when too many fail the EU can freeze accounts/ATM withdrawel ...

That has never applied to Riel and most notes are in good condition these days.Green Martian wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 7:17 pmYeah the money here is horrible. Any note not in mint condition is frowned upon or rejected.
