Do Khmer people hate their riel currency?

I've never once been charged for exchanging money, even if one of the staff had to spend ten minutes going to the market to get change.Gasser wrote: I got so tired of getting screwed changing dollars (the lil fuckers always take out some for that, sometimes they'll hand it to a guy say in a resto, he'll go across the street for change and bam yer out a dollar for the exchange "service"

True, that's one thing I like about Cambodia, very informal, no 5-10% ' fee' for currency exchange, and very competitive rates.Lucky Lucan wrote:I've never once been charged for exchanging money, even if one of the staff had to spend ten minutes going to the market to get change.Gasser wrote: I got so tired of getting screwed changing dollars (the lil fuckers always take out some for that, sometimes they'll hand it to a guy say in a resto, he'll go across the street for change and bam yer out a dollar for the exchange "service"

No, but Khmer people should hate foreign idiots who ask questions like this, or "can you be friends with Khmer people," or "do Khmer girls ever date for love".
If there's ever a fight to tighten visa restrictions, the posts on this forum alone would be evidence enough to argue for a complete closure of the borders North Korea style.

If you're reading this you made poor life choices.
I have had this happen several times . The 50,000KHR note looks very similar to a 5000 , the shop keeper did not recognize them as 50,000 , I guess because they see so few of them .upstage wrote:Gone to the market, paid some food in value of ~ 15 000KHR, gave a 50 000KHR note, lady declined.LTO wrote:Do they "prefer" it?upstage wrote:So the main question is, why will people prefer a 20 USD note over a 100 000 KHR, or 10 USD over a 50 000KHR.
Gave a 20 USD, she picked it up. It clearly wasn't an issue of having not enough money to give change.
I believe they do prefer it.
I'm not even talking about the time I had 100 000KHR notes, was a pain in the ass to break them, even harder than breaking a Franklin.

"Do Khmer People Hate Their Riel Currency" ? They have a "Riel Currency" but no real currency. If there was truly faith in the Riel, why have dollars at all ?
Currency trust builds slowly over decades and can be lost in an instant. Inertia/habit and hands-off policy by NBC play a huge role.wackyjacky wrote:If there was truly faith in the Riel, why have dollars at all ?
You skimmed the whole thread?
Yes, they love to get the crispy new US dollars... and cheat you with your change. and be careful that shop keeper is giving you a change with old dirty bills crampled, torn and nasty looking.
I do not think they hate the currency - many say it is just easier to use the USD and it allows international transactions in the one currency.
The riel is only useful in Cambodia.
The riel is good for low value transactions up to around the equivalent of $100usd.
After that amount only USD will be easily accepted.
One example is purchasing land - never done in riel, always USD.
To carry a significant amount of riel is quite bulky, bricks of cash, plus harder to count.
Same, same in VN....land is usually quoted in USD.
Even the bank will have problems gathering enough (new or good condition) riel notes without pre-ordering.
Amongst older Cambodians there is still distrust of banks and a liking for hard currency.
One deal had us go to the bank, withdraw the USD cash, count it in front of the seller, hand it to the seller who then counted it again and handed it back to the bank.
Hours wasted - but the seller was adamant that that was what they wanted........
I now try to do EFT for transactions where possible - most of the younger Cambodians understand electronic money transfers.
Cannot see any move to de-dollarise the Cambodian economy working for at least another generation.....just small moves with government agencies being paid in riel.

Also while we're complaining about ATM's, where's Spidgy?
Why do all holders of the Wing debit cards stand at the ATM, put card in machine, type in the pin incorrectly a few times, read out loud all on-screen instructions, withdraw a small amount of Riel, request receipt, count money three times, study receipt like it contains the meaning of life, count money another three times. Put card back back in machine and repeat the process 300 times?
Is it because anymore Riel than that is too thick for the hole (amen), or are they genuinely retarded?

Have a bunch of 20,000 riel notes recently been put into circulation? I've gotten like 3 of them as change in the last few days. Can't remember ever seeing so many before.
Follow my lame Twitter feed: @gavin_mac
Some ACLEDA ATM only give out 20,000 KHR notes actually.
