The powers-that-be have concreted the length of bar street on Victory Hill widening it a little bit and turning it into a drag strip with no speed bumps. In the past I have seen cars travelling down the road at more than 50mph and sadly it seems it will be just a matter of time before either a Khmer child or drunk barang gets mown down.

A small child was killed down there, when i lived there. Guy reversed in his SUV,not seeing the wandering baby boy behind. That was when the road was shit.

Sihanoukville has a "Sleazy Street"? That's like calling a place in Minneapolis "Cold Street."

On the hole, Victroy Hill is the asshole of SNVL, but your right - there's so much of it everywhere. A quiet Pataya perhaps of yesteryear.

It's more of a hemorrhoid on the anus. The characters you see up there during the light of day are truly frightening - a dissipated 50 year old w/face tats & Mohawk is not out of the norm. Without the Russians who are at least somewhat normal, it would be gruesome.

How does it compare to the daytime scene at Golden Sorya Mall?

If Russian sex tourists are the ones to raise the average quality of foreigners in Sihanoukville, I know understand why I've never wanted to head down there.wackyjacky wrote: Without the Russians who are at least somewhat normal, it would be gruesome.

90% aren't 'sex tourists'. Russian expat families live up there. It's Russian couples & families that visit & prefer to stay on the Hill, why the f*ck I can't imagine ! The 'sex tourists' are from elsewhere mostly.scobienz wrote:If Russian sex tourists are the ones to raise the average quality of foreigners in Sihanoukville, I know understand why I've never wanted to head down there.wackyjacky wrote: Without the Russians who are at least somewhat normal, it would be gruesome.

The Russians are mostly young couples, late 20s early 30s, with a couple of kids not causing any trouble.scobienz wrote:If Russian sex tourists are the ones to raise the average quality of foreigners in Sihanoukville, I know understand why I've never wanted to head down there.wackyjacky wrote: Without the Russians who are at least somewhat normal, it would be gruesome.
The heavy drinkers tend to be Nordic and the only trouble I have ever had up there was from a loud-mouthed Aussie.
Now only half a dozen 'girly bars' are left and the number declines year-on-year. There are as many regular bars and a few new restaurants have opened up.
Victory Hill was the original backpacker area in SNV and has always attracted the budget conscious visitors. It was the equivalent of Lakeside in PP. The difference now is that the new 'flashpackers' have more money than the long term expats that frequent the Hill and they have moved on to greener pastures and colonised Koh Rong's southern tip.
There is one notable business on the Hill chasing the flashpacker dollar called Backpacker Heaven although it doesn't look like the places I stayed in all those years ago.

Update:
They have built bollards at the top of the road to stop cars going down the street making it into a pedestrian / moto street
