Tipping culture among expats
I'm on my mobile device, forgive me but I just wanted to know, as a Yank who was raised among a heavy tipping induced culture, how has Cambodia, if at all, changed your tipping habits? Pubs? Restaurants?
I tip a lot less than back in America. If you don't tip back in your home country, do you now leave the spare 1 or 2 thousand riel in the check bin?

Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.

My tipping habits have not changed no matter what country I am in. Service is service no matter where you are.

When in Rome do as the locals do. I now gestate (both physically an orally), drive, bargain and tip like a local. I also copy like one.

Aren't barang generally ''tipping'' already with the ''barang tax'' or ''idiot tax''.
Does tipping just encourage more ''idiot taxes''?
Has anyone seen the outrageous prices of pineapples these days?!
Treat em' mean, keep em' keen!!

I tip too much everywhere I go: guess it comes from having worked in the hotel industry all my life. Started out with wages so low that I relied on tips to survive.

I used to tip at the places i frequented the most in the expectation that I would get a better , more friendly and a quicker service, and at first i did but slowly over time the service became worse and the attitude of the staff became cheeky, they would hover around as i paid and no thank you. These days i only tip if the service has been outstanding which is hardly ever.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

Interesting point, in the US the wages of service staff employees are greatly reduced due to the 'tipping' culture, so it' pretty rude not to tip, Makes sense to me, makes it easier for an employer to hire people and reduces the burden on him to pay them, and in theory it means that you get better service. In other countries it's not the same, salaries are the same and not expected to be mainly consisting of gratuities, so tipping is less important. In other places like Finland if you tip someone you are directly insulting them. Where does Cambodia fit in that sliding scale?
On a sidenote I just finished a course with an extremely devout (big dafty beard and all that) Saudi student who is off to LA to study for three months there. Seems adamant he is not going to tip anyone, I tried to explain, but gave up in the end, leave him to it. I'm pretty sure they'll learn him.

I tip 20% + if I get good service, but I virtually never do here in SV. A few months back we went to a beach BBQ place, we were the only customers, & they had 9 staff. They forgot to make our dinners ! Waiters & bartenders aren't quite as brain dead in PP or BKK. The beach areas of Thailand are just as bad though.
Like Hanno, I was in the hospitality bus for awhile. I tip the same as in the west.

I will leave 1-2,000 riel as change, if it is there and the service was worth it.
Normally, however I follow this rule: "Tipping is a heathen practice invented by Philistines, implemented by barbarians, encouraged by shysters and advertised by inbreds to fund their near-illegal slave wages.
Polite society does not tolerate tipping."
I never get tipped for doing my job. I don't do it for others. Sorry.

Truly, I've got nothing better to do.

This is the most tipped over topic on the forum. If you miss your home country so much fuck off back to it.
