Living/learning Khmer in the provinces
Hi,
I'm moving back to Cambodia soon and want to get serious about studying Khmer. I've lived in Phnom Penh before and I'll need to be there for work a bit again but any ideas as to a good place near the city I should live and can study? I thought about just moving up to Sen Monorom as I love it there but it's just a bit far if I need to work in PP sometimes.

I answered a similar question on another forum .
One of the best courses is called Colloquial Cambodian by David Smyth .

Thanks for tgat. I'm also looking to do a course with a teacher in addition to living in an area where I'm forced to speak Khmer. Any thoughts on a place near PP? Not Kampot... I love it there but drink too much. K Chhnang? Battambang (or is it too easy to speak English there?)
If you want to be 'forced' to speak Cambodian Kompong Chhnang is an option, Battambang has a decent amount of foreigners so is a bit similar to Kampot in that way.Camsplodia wrote:Thanks for tgat. I think Sem Monorom is a nice option, lovely town, and since the new road has been finished a trip to PP will only take you about 7 hours.
If you want to study Khmer, just go to a local highschool and talk to a (Cambodian) English teacher. For a few bucks an hour he/she will be happy to do private lessons with you.
Last time I made that drive it took me 5 hours without driving like a huge arse, and was borderline orgasmic. Might not have the scenery you get going to Koh Kong, but it's still beautiful and the road is in great condition.Kachang wrote:If you want to be 'forced' to speak Cambodian Kompong Chhnang is an option, Battambang has a decent amount of foreigners so is a bit similar to Kampot in that way.Camsplodia wrote:Thanks for tgat. Sen Monorom is probably one of the best places in Cambodia. I know for a fact there's at least one passable teacher, and if you don't learn Khmer there then you obviously just don't care.

Thanks. Great replies. I think I could probably manage that with one week in 3 in PP. I do love it up there.
I'm also toying with the idea of staying with Khmer friends looking to rent a room on the outskirts of PP. The Dad speaks great English, as do his son and daughter but should be a lot of options for improving my Khmer.

Not everybody owns a car, the trip will take a bit more than 5 hrs by (mini)bus, guaranteed. I guess minibus 6 hrs, bus7-8 hrs.Roy G Biv wrote:

You could live down in Kandal province, it's lovely down there near the basac river. The eastern side is the prettiest, cross the monivong bridge and turn right immediately and go down about 30 or 40 Ks.lovely green countryside and no barangs and just over an hour from Phnom Penh. Less than an hour to Lucky in Takamao. Or Araksat or one of the sand islands.Theres a huge one in the bassac, Koh ksaich tonlea, or widows island where the KR exiled the widows of the victims. Lots of killing down there not long after the fall of phnom penh, that's where sin sisamoth was killed.

Easy, live near Toul Kork, go to RUPP, best value and real learning in PP. On Russian Blvd near Mao Tse Tung ( in the NW of the city).
$200 a term. I believe the next term starts in early July.

Fair point, but neither do I; I bike it.Kachang wrote:Not everybody owns a car, the trip will take a bit more than 5 hrs by (mini)bus, guaranteed. I guess minibus 6 hrs, bus7-8 hrs.
As for RUPP, good option if you really want to go full-on formal and get properly academic about it, but personally there's no way I'd choose Phnom Penh over Mondulkiri these days, and given I've not had the pleasure of meeting HE or the world's most uninfluential monarch, I've never had much need to talk very plau-gaa. Makes most Khmers think you're an uppity pratt anyway.

Don't learn Khmer in Mondulkiri, nobody in any other part of the country will understand you. Same goes for Siem Reap. Battambang is ok.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I would go to Takeo or Kompong Chnang, both are quite pleasant, not far from Phnom Penh and have very few barang residents.
Stung Treng would also be good, but a bit more of a trek. I love Sen Monorom, but it's a bit of a drive and there's a lot of foreigners there.
