Again, a Monk is far away of being enlightened, he is you and me! on his way maybe ... but maybe not.

Cambodian monks don't always wear saffron, some wear maroon or ochre colored robes. These Chinese fake monks are copying a completely different Mahayana style. They often have ordinary clothes under the robes, I saw one pull off his robes one time, it took about 2 seconds for him to turn into a civilian. I haven't actually seen any locals giving them any money, I've talked to locals who laughed at them and knew well they were just scammers.\Bernhardow wrote:The clothes and mainly the Orange color is symbolizing Buddha. Nobody knows who is wearing this clothes and if he deserves respect ... so what is fake about this ? Of course, it can be a way to make a easy living but so are some "real" Monks doing too. So what is the wrongdoing ?
It's their aggressive technique that pisses many off, where they thrust some card or beads into your hand and then demand $5 or whatever.

These fake monks are quite tame compared to the walk you down the garden path flipper scammers though. They are less annoying than bracelet kids imo. At least the fake monks don't talk to you and ask you what your favorite colour is.
You wanna buy bwacelet?
Saying that though i wouldn't exactly be shedding tears if a group of locals got hold of one (the fake monks not the bwacelet kids) - pulled his robes over his head and gave him abit of a beating and robbed him....ok be nice...maybe just chased him down the road rather than a beating.
I wonder what Pol Pot would have done with the flippers and the fake monks?
Riddled with AK-47 bullets against a wall , or promotion to officers?

There is a totally baffling, piecemeal, national rage profile.
On the one hand you have frothy contempt for perceived slights on the national character like nakedness at Angkor or flip flops bearing the national flag and/or royalist seal and the alleged skulduggery of the vietnamese generally.
On the other hand, hustlers who imitate figureheads of the supposed cultural-religious heart of the country are met with ambivalence.
I get the feeling they are more bemused by the reaction of foreigners to the fake monks than the actual fake monks themselves.

There have been quite a few cases of fake monks being arrested, but they were Khmers imitating the local Theravada orders. Real monks need a monk ID.

I think the Vietnamese back in the 60's had the best idea. Nothing a few litres of petrol can't sort out.
My posts are just jokes, maybe they're rude, offensive, and politically incorrect. They're not my opinion, viewpoint, idea, or judgement, but they're just fucking jokes so lighten up.

The Post Weekend has a decent feature on this today, with some interesting comments from the Police (they have no laws available to arrest them) and local reactions to them.

I wonder why Cambodian sources keep calling them "Vietnamese monks" when they are clearly Chinese, including the one that was busted in Mondolkiri would had a Chinese passport.Pedrazo wrote:...Your wish might come true: "Vietnamese monks continue fundraising walk without action taken by the authorities"

Are they actually part of a legit Monk/religious org? They really don't like it when you follow them and yell chow! The Khmer love it though and smile and laugh.
It better be smart, not clever. Funny, not insulting.
They call the obviously Chinese pagoda at Bokor Vietnamese. It's what's done apparently.LTO wrote:I wonder why Cambodian sources keep calling them "Vietnamese monks" when they are clearly Chinese, including the one that was busted in Mondolkiri would had a Chinese passport.Pedrazo wrote:...Your wish might come true: "Vietnamese monks continue fundraising walk without action taken by the authorities"
