I was a number One, knew a lot of threes, wanted to be a Two (met only a handful) and went home again. It isn't easy going home, but it haS ITS UPSIDE, EG--Less chance of having a limb amputated if I get into an auto accident.

I think there's a uniqueness to being an expat living in Asia as apposed to being an expat in western countries, or living there. In particular, for me, the contrast lies within the often sterile, predictable existence of home life. Sit on a bus or train, go to a pub, restaurant, outdoor feature or event in the west and there's a knowing of what you're going to get. Walk down a street, take a tuk tuk , have a meal at a road-side stand, meet locals or simply mind your own affairs in Cambodia, or any other Asian country, and you can't exactly be sure of what your experience might be - life always seems to be in flux, and as a consequence, I feel more alive for it.

Initially it was to get away from my hometown. After a while you start believing that a new country will mean a fresh start, a new skin and being free of baggage. It took me a few countries to understand it doesn't work like that. Palm trees or snowy plains it doesn't matter, you can't change who you are. But you can understand your own limitations and work with them to find a place of solace, wherever that may be.
A tree born crooked will never grow straight.
oddly I got "the new start" eons ago leaving my home area and going 1300 miles away. At this point I have to go much farther to even try and achieve this effect. Perhaps I would not be a good one to answer this question as it's not addictive to me, rather simpler, and less mentally cluttered and stressed. I think Thoreau would like it.
Mr. Londo was bored at some point and wished he was in the Kingdom of Wonder instead.
My mind is in a perpetual Kingdom of Wonder.

What makes the expat lifestyle so addictive? Hmm. Could be the booze, or the crystal meth. Hemingway was an expat all is life, by the end he was a wreck, as witnessed by his fellow boozers in Havana.

Yes, a wasted life he led, didn't he? But of course, his end wasn't in Havana at all, but in Idaho, after two wretched years of decline in the USA bedeviled by mental illness and the FBI.khmerhit wrote:What makes the expat lifestyle so addictive?
