Do You Enjoy Returning To Your Place of Origin?
I think it depends largely on what you do in Cambodia. If you're up for taking it easy and can take time off when you want, then it's of course, very relaxed and not demanding at all. If you're running a business or working closely with a staff, it can be extremely demanding and might I add, frustrating (as with any country).
The heat can also take it's toll on those who aren't used to it as well.

I went home for a visit recently after a few years away. Ireland is a fantastic country to visit but as I jetted out ten days later I felt that I had spent enough time there and eaten way too much. As with posters above, I need long intervals to make a trip 'home' enjoyable.

I was born and grew up in Germany, but that does not mean its my place of origin, its my birthplace rather.
My home was always where I lived at the moment and since 1999 it is Cambodia.
I go back to Europe every 4-5 years, but spend much more time in France than in Bavaria, where I was born.
Most of my wife's family live in and around Paris and I admire the Bistros, watching the grazy tourists while enjoying a glas of redwine.

These are exactly my thoughts. It always feels a bit strange going home on holiday though; especially when your mates are working.scobienz wrote:I love going back to the UK for a few weeks. Great beer. Fish and chips. Football. Cheese.
Imager a couple of years away I get homesick and miss it badly. I fear a trip is imminent.
After two weeks there though I have had enough. It's time to leave again.
After a couple of years between visits all the things you used to take for granted - cheese, fish and chips, football in the pub with your mates, proper beers - have you bouncing towards the plane in the same way that you did when you first came out to SE Asia!
Two weeks later I'm ready for the off, but this year I'll be back for Christmas and it's one of the few times in the UK that you wouldn't wish to be anywhere else.

I have seen drs ( broken collar bone, broken bone in my foot, accident where i lost one pinkie finger, kidney stones, blood clot) and dentists ( cleaning, teeth pulled, bridge put it) over here
But between the age of 14 and 36 never saw either one

Very similar to eric & scobie. At last, proper beer, fish n chips and so on. But most of all, the countryside, wonderful little villages, towns, country pubs. Last visit, we went around the Cotswolds, the Chilterns, the Lake District, the Peak district, Cambridge, Notts, Yorks, Derbys, Kent. I loved seeing Roman ruins by the roadside of routes to Cirencester, Devizes & Hardy country, not to mention Newstead Abbey and Sherwood Forest. Pub grub in the UK is much better than it used to be. Bloody miserable weather, though.
But it was still nice to return to Cambodia!

I'm never going back to blighty. My family r scum and all my old rave friends r crack/smackheads. Everyone else, old, ugly, with kids.

I always enjoy going back, if for no other reason than seeing family and friends. It's also nice to eat food that I miss, drink some decent beer and wine, and experience cold briefly.
However, we're committed to returning this year, so I'll be moving back. Fortunately I have to return regularly for work so that will ease the transition for me. Not so sure about how easy it will be for the wife and kids, but there's one way to find out.

That's an exceedingly long time to go around with a broken clavicle, but I applaud you your perseverance.Phuket2006 wrote:whatever works for you.
