I've been living here for two years already and I love it. My current contract is up, but I found another job and will be moving from the province to PP come August, so maybe my mind will change after living there for a bit? Then again, I'm a city girl. I love activity... And the availability of protein powder :-)

I'd be happier if I could have a more pleasant walking around experience. My daily walks are filled with obnoxious stimuli.
Maybe it's widely known: Cambodians' subjective reporting of happiness places them 145th of 158 countries, in a statistical tie with the Central African Republic.

I'm not happy with how things currently are, I'm unsatisfied professionally and if I hadn't met my girlfriend, I wouldn't stay here.
Cambodia has a lot to offer but I definitely came at the wrong time.

I'll be honest. Cambodia's appeal is waning for me at the moment and I think it might be time to move on after three years here. I'm in my forties and semi-retired and work only when I get bored, but I'm finding myself increasingly think how the hell am I going to fill another day today. There are only so many coffees to drink, so many series to download etc etc. I don't drink that much and don't go to hostess bars, so the evenings can be dull. There are no bookshops worth their salt and no city per se to wander around and discover new places.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not dissing the place. I just find myself manufacturing increasing fake reasons to jump on a flight to Bangkok, Tokyo, Singapore, KL or Hong Kong these days, and it's about time I listened to the reasons for that.

I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.

Well, this is your problem. There's no reason for a single semi-retired guy in his 40's to live in Phnom Penh if he doesn't drink and go to hostess bars. This Charming Man wrote:I don't drink that much and don't go to hostess bars, so the evenings can be dull.

Wrong time for me personally and professionally. I should have stayed in Aus for another few years instead of moving over straight away. Going back to Uni first to change degrees would have been another good idea, my experience and qualifications aren't a good match for the job market here. It isn't impossible to find the work I'm suited for but usually they can fill the same position with a Khmer for a third of the price.Jamie_Lambo wrote:what time would have been better for you? 10 years ago or maybe 10 years in the future?
Teaching English is not something I would pursue long term. It pays the bills, I like living here for the most part but professionally it feels like a waste, I should be increasing my experience in my existing field or retraining, not wasting time in a job I have no intention of turning into a career.

Cambodia is a culturally bankrupt country. There is ONE journal of Khmer literature for the entire country and not a single contemporary Khmer novelist worthy of any mention. There's no art scene and no credible institutions of higher learning. Filmmakers? Forget it. Khmer TV? An absolute embarrassment. The National Museum of Cambodia? Mostly leftovers determined to be of little value on the market, the good stuff residing in private collections of the rich. The Royal Palace? About as culturally and historically authentic as the Castle at Disneyland - gauche, gaudy, and fake. Cambodia is a terrible country to be in if you're looking for stimulation someplace other than your crotch. This Charming Man wrote:I'll be honest.
