'The Storm Makers' puts Cambodia's sex-trafficking under spotlight
LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Cambodians say that when human traffickers arrive in a village, they bring a storm and tears with them, an experience that Aya, sold into slavery when she was 16, will never forget.
Her story is at the center of the "The Storm Makers", a documentary by French-Cambodian filmmaker Guillaume Suon, who spent three years filming human trafficking victims and traffickers in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation.

Caught this on PBS the other night. Seemed interesting. The head guy from the agency pretends to be a christian who can't lie while basically running a slave trading organization. Total sleeze... One the the girls mother's seemed pretty rough. Calling her own daughter a whore for bringing back a baby and telling her she wishes she would sell the kid and while the kid is laying next to her.... Pretty grim story. I was a bit distracted while it was on but saved it on the PVR to watch again maybe tonight.

Watching it now. Horrible story of that poor girl's life. She is quite a survivor. Very emotional interview with her father towards the end.
Still, I feel even more sorry for her young child, who is hated by the entire family and seriously abused by his own mother. How is that poor kid going to turn out?
Sometimes I forget how beautiful the Cambodian countryside can be.
Not sure if this link will work everywhere.

Do they though? I've never heard this expression, asked a few of my Khmer colleagues and they never heard it used before either.

It sounds atypical of Khmer folklore. Storms as a bad omen is a Western thing (Greek to Shakespeare), the Khmer holidays are set around the beginning and end of the wet season, and historically the failure of the monsoon and drought was the big killer. Although there are storms they aren't as rare or as deleterious as large Atlantic storms in Europe or else there must be traffickers entering every village, every day during the wet season.Jackal wrote:Phuket2006 wrote:'The Storm Makers' puts Cambodia's sex-trafficking under spotlight

It's just another example of Western people appealing to Western people via a weak Asian "folklore" stereotype.
Absolutely!

The female victim who is the focus of the story says those exact words to convey how locals in the Cambodian countryside describe the human traffickers who masquerade as overseas employment agencies.Jackal wrote:Phuket2006 wrote:'The Storm Makers' puts Cambodia's sex-trafficking under spotlight

Just finished watching it and I feel like I've been hit by a ton of bricks...
PBS link won't work, but several people have uploaded the full movie to Youtube.
Don't have an hour? Here's the summary:
A prick deceives poor villagers into selling their young people with false promises of high salaries abroad.
Her mother and others know what they're doing but sell their daughters anyway. Dad reveals he could have sold their motorbike or oxen to get out of debt, but Mom insisted. Now he harbors homicidal feelings toward his wife but doesn't want to end up in prison.
Sold off, the 16-year-old daughter is worked like a slave in Malaysia, runs away, then is captured and raped with impunity. Thrown into prison for not having the passport that was confiscated by her abusive employer, discovers she's pregnant, rescued by NGO.
Mothers go on to recruit more villagers for Prick for $5/head.
NGO returns girl to her family. Mother blames her daughter for getting raped and pregnant, thus bringing her another mouth to feed. Would prefer she had died or been maimed and sold the child.
Just when you think it can't get any more depressing, says the girl: "I hate this child. At his birth I wanted to give him away. When I think about the man who raped me, I say to myself: 'Since I can't do anything to him, I'll take revenge on his son.' This is why I kept him. To hit him. Sometimes I strangle him until he suffocates, and I release him just before he dies. When my heart remembers I hit this child."
Moral of the story: Life is cruel and people are SHIT.

Like I said before storms happen every day for 6 months of the year and are actually seen as positive by the country folk. If they wanted a more accurate term then they could have gone with 'The Famine Makers' because a failed wet season scares the country folk more than a storm, which they see thousands of during their lives.

Third Day Celebrations - Leung Sakk
On the third day of New Year celebrations people wash all the idols of Lord Buddha with scented water. It is said this ensures good rains all year long. Children pay respect to their elders by washing their feet and get blessings in return. This ceremony of giving a special bath to Buddha statues, monks and elders is called Pithi Srang Preah.

The fact that you're (rightfully) outraged over this proves that "people" aren't shit.seidier wrote:Moral of the story: Life is cruel and people are SHIT.
Some people are shit and a lot of them happen to live in this part of the world. Other concentrations can be found in Raqqa, Wall Street and the Square Mile.
