$120 50sq meters, great view, separate kitchen and bathroom in a good area without any snooty whity arseholes around. Leaves my budget with plenty of room for off time freedom, not having to wear a dog collar all day. Life is good.

So basically you want all the good stuff that you get in a mid-range condo, but you don't want the condo price tag. That's why you aren't finding anything.PenhMan wrote:By the way, I hate modern western apartments. I wanted somewhat updated Khmer style place, with quite a bit of room. Frequently, the kitchens were the biggest disappointments -- no cupboards, tiny sink, little counter space, gas canister single burner hotplates, fridge beside the bed or across the room ....... I don't need anything fancy like a western condo, just basic working and storage space, good largish sink, and two-pot gas burners and nearby ventilation for cooking.
A typical noob mistake when buying/renting in Cambodia is to place far too much importance on kitchens and outside spaces such as balconies. The kitchen is irrelevant, because if you are single you won't cook anything more complicated than a sandwich, and if you have a partner you still won't cook. Balconies are generally hot, dusty and noisy. Much better to have a small air-conditioned cubbyhole.

Trust me, I know from experience, it doesn't matter how westernised your better half is, or how flash your fitted kitchen is, they will still sit on the kitchen floor to prepare food and your Electrolux oven will gather dust while the clay pot grill gets sparked up daily.starkmonster wrote:The kitchen is irrelevant, because if you are single you won't cook anything more complicated than a sandwich, and if you have a partner you still won't cook.
Also however big your house is or however many bedrooms you have, everyone will still congregate in one room.
$475 per month, detached 2 bedroom house, partially furnished, both bedrooms en-suite with another bathroom downstairs. Front yard big enough for the car and a couple of trees. One of the little sidestreets near Aeon. Rent hasn't changed in the several years I've been there, though I gather the landlady is planning to raise it when I move out.

HUH: we eat in 5 out of 7 nights/week and my gf an di love to cook ,
why eat out?
The second most important room in the house
Balconies are only good for hanging clothes out on to dry.
Having a yard is important, but hard to find for a newcomer in PP

I can tell you my experience. I was looking at apartments and finally thought I had gotten a good one for $250. Turns out they were doing construction for a new building on the premises, the landlord was an old general in the military of some sort, tried to force us into a year contract, and then I noticed the meter spinning when he opened the door and nothing was on at all. I checked. I left.
I got a hotel/gh. They have rooms for $10 a day AC, but if you pay another few bucks a day for their best room it comes with fridge, AC, big TV, table and chairs, etc. Say $13 to $16 a day. No deposit. No rubbish fee, electric, or water bs. Clean sheets and towels and they clean if you want. And if the people that you rent from do not have the proper paperwork and register you with the police you can both be fined. Not that problem at a hotel. Then I just took my time to find a place without stress.
Flooding is a top priority in my books. And location is a lot too.
I found a nice little place across Japanese Friendship Bridge, single story, 2 bed, big yard, but you have to look and may need a little help negotiating. I got a good deal.

Our kitchen is standard khmer, nice to have the fridge away from the sleeping quarters, hate that buzz, and yes they will sit on the floor and pound on some ill smelling project for hours it seems, disgusting little fish, all these eyes looking at you from the 'other side'.. soup with some off beat looking fish head peeking out at you, it's just real gross for an expat, that's why I like the kitchen separate. I trained the gf to do my fave dishes so, burgers, fish and chips, sandwiches, salads and continental breakfasts are part of the menu when I am craving that. And all at prices unbelievable to the common westerner as she gets the produce fresh from the local market without the whity fee on top. $5 a day will keep me more than happy in that regard.
Hmm. No, that is simply mistaken. $500 gets you quite a fine spot, and at that rate you're probably paying a foreigner price. I am. For $500 I'm more than content w/ a nice spot in Tuol Tom Poung with 3 bdr, 3 baths, improbably high ceilings, quiet & good neighbors, lovely decorative features, nice kitchen, good AC, everything works, laundry machine, elec. at cost, free wifi & TV, cleaning once a week, landlord's kids walk my dog every mid-day and give her a bath twice a month--nothing to complain about at all. Could I get it for less? Probably; who cares, I like it.air stone wrote:There isn't a place in my building for less than 1000. Hardly Hollywood. I have seen what you get for less than 500 in PP. It's a fucking dump. Wouldn't pass a safety inspection in the United States but would probably be 4/5 stars in Europe judging from what I've seen. Great places for loser expats English teachers on heroin and/or yama though.

Yes we pay for the power they give us the bill right from the utility company so no mark up. When we use the air conditioner every night during hot season it costs $50. for a month.RainMan wrote:But you have to pay for the power.oxbowlarry wrote:No one will believe it but we pay $20 a month for 2story private villa on the water with large bedroom with balconey, kitchen ,living room and bath. The landlords remodeled the place like we wanted too. Doubling the size of the bedroom, adding upstairs balcony and also made the kitchen double its size.
We have a large 3drawer refer, washing machine, computer and fans going all the time except when using ac. My wife loves our gas stove w/large oven we spend less than $50/week for food and I eat very well I'm going to be using the rotisserie to cook a kilo sized pork roast today. I give my wife $350./a month and that pays for everything and she has left over cash to buy cloths etc.
i'm the one who has to die when it's time for me to die, so let me live my life the way i want to
