in 2008/2009 in PP, i was living alone on around $1,600 ( which included $400/month to my daughter, rent $400) eating out 50% , bars 2,3x/week
now living in Phuket its around $1,200 for 2 of us ( eat out 10%, no bars)
I'd say for my life style, phuket is cheaper.

Then someone is jacking up the price on them our power bill was just under $20 each month till we installed the air conditioner. I think the rate was 600 riel/ kW but jumps to 800 riel when you use more power.Hanno wrote:Even the volunteers living in a single room spend more than that on power.....pablomiguelgarcia wrote:Sure if you go out a lot around the Riverside and BKK I'd agree on that. I just eat what the gf brings home from the market, less than $5-10 a day on that, and I don't drink beer every day anymore, and regular Anchor/Angkor draft at $2 a jug is fine I think.
Internet $15, power $20, I don't understand how you can spend so much, unless you leave the ac on all day. I just have a couple of fans running and a small fridge. You might not enjoy visiting my apartment though, no fluffy furniture or anything, quite simple actually.

I spend very little in Cambodia, mainly due to the fact that there are hardly any consumer goods here that I'm interested in buying. I've never seen a couch or a desk anywhere around here and thought to myself "that's really nice, I think it would look good in my home." The furniture here tends to be really tacky. Neither have I had much interest in buying an outdated, overpriced laptop or another kitchen appliance that's broken after a week of use. My main purchases are food and drinks. Speaking of which, I recently noticed that my local grocer is now stocking a large quantity of Maggi noodles. Funny that he would suddenly start selling them, just weeks after they were banned in India for containing high levels of lead.
"The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had earlier said that tests deemed the instant noodles to contain "unsafe and hazardous" amounts of lead."

But yeah, anyway, shopping in Cambodia sucks.

All stuff pulled because of contamination etc are brought here. When I first came here there was a big scare in U.S. With saminela poisoning from Jif peanut butter so were pulled from all market shelves. At the Luckys supermarket they had a large display and 2 for price of 1 sale of Jif peanut butter.MONEYBACKGUARANTEE wrote:I spend very little in Cambodia, mainly due to the fact that there are hardly any consumer goods here that I'm interested in buying. You misquoted me. I never wrote that. You're dishonest.
What I did write and what is absolutely true is that computers, phones and short time prostitutes are cheaper in Singapore.

Wow, welcome to the board. It's not often that we have such erudite, intellectual and profound thoughts expressed here.splinter wrote: What I did write and what is absolutely true is that computers, phones and short time prostitutes are cheaper in Singapore.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

For me when in PP
rent is around $100pm in a central location (close to Rehabb), which includes light and power and good internet in my own room in a large shared house. The A/C is metered and it looks like 4kw to 6kw usage for the past 4 days running a couple of hours a day at 800 reil a kw/hr.
As an aside, I arrived back on Thursday and opened the door to my room and was hit by a cool breeze. The A/C had turned itself on - probably due to a power cut a couple of weeks ago and had been running 24/7 since then, but still only used 192kw (A new meter had just been installed hence I know how much was used).
I spend roughly $20- $30 per day on drinks and food because I cannot be bothered to make breakfast etc.
a Big Breakfast with bottomless coffee at Lonestar daily for under $6.00, which sets me up for the day, then just one other meal, usually around $7.
Beers range from $0.75 to $1.25 and I have about 10 or so a day plus I finish the night off in Skirts bar where there is a happy hour at 11pm to 1 am and have a few spirits as a nightcap. Petrol is a buck or two a week, phone about $10pm.
If I lived full time in PP and had a couple of quiet nights in a week and made my own breakfasts, my expenses would fall to under $800pm. I do not have a budget and could afford to spend way more, but I have a hard time doing so.
