You spend $60 a day on drinks? Party on, guess you need a good health insurance then. I wouldn't wanna have any sort of open surgical repair done around here, and probably not even in Bangkok. Where do you dine at $100 a meal? Are you a Sofitel regular or something? Most of the time I pay less than $20 at places around here for steaks and plenty of beer, but I seldom go to overly fancy places, mostly cozy little beer gardens, I try to avoid the rich here, they often keep a hostile attitude to mixed couples I've noticed.. haven't found it's worth the expense honestly. I actually really enjoy a bit of homemade soup, it's healthy and quite inexpensive. Western styled apartment, the few I've seen here were full of fake leather furniture, and felt overpriced compared to a regular Khmer styled apartment, and I get sick from having an AC run all the time. But hey if that is what you think is the lifestyle to have here, party on, I am not gonna stop you.

You're not very good at reading Pablo. Neither MEo or I said anything of the kind. He says he spends $400 plus $400 a month for going out to eat once a week and for occasional beers.
I said I allow myself $1000 a month for cash expenses which includes meals, beers etc.

You spend $30 every day on meals and beers? That's fancy living, I guess you go out in the downtown areas every day then, and what is the best part of town, the Riverside, BKK? I'd rather be in a less expensive and quieter place without too many tourists around, but hey that's just me. Enjoy your lavish lifestyle, but don't forget to exercise, for the heart.

Plus sundry expenses, shit racks up quick. Could I live on less? Easy. But why would I? I have no intention of taking money to the grave.

Sure if you go out a lot around the Riverside and BKK I'd agree on that. I just eat what the gf brings home from the market, less than $5-10 a day on that, and I don't drink beer every day anymore, and regular Anchor/Angkor draft at $2 a jug is fine I think.
Internet $15, power $20, I don't understand how you can spend so much, unless you leave the ac on all day. I just have a couple of fans running and a small fridge. You might not enjoy visiting my apartment though, no fluffy furniture or anything, quite simple actually.

Even the volunteers living in a single room spend more than that on power.....pablomiguelgarcia wrote:Sure if you go out a lot around the Riverside and BKK I'd agree on that. Yep, though how do you avoid the "running out of money" before "running out of life" ?Hanno wrote:... I have no intention of taking money to the grave.

We are a "left-over" Khmer/Expatriate family of two, long term Cambodia residents, the kids are grown-up and left Cambodia to live, study and work overseas. Our average monthly living expense in Phnom Penh is about $2200 plus/minus 10% (no rental expense due to my wife's house).
