Have to agree. On quality and quantity, Saigon is far better value (excepting Mexican food).
Taxis and Tuk Tuks are absurdly expensive in Cambodia. Saigon is the cheapest. In Bangkok last week I spent 90 minutes in the cab for 100 baht. About the same as going riverside to Bkk with the Tuk Tuk mafia.
Yangon is extremely expensive. Bangkok would be more expensive than Phnom Penh overall.
What about Pinoy land ? Maybe ricecakes can chime in.

Faeries, come take me out of this dull world, For I would ride with you upon the wind, Run on the top of the dishevelled tide, And dance upon the mountains like a flame.

For me, it's becoming (absurdly) cheaper to live here. Pesky boss keeps on raising the salary and now she's gone and chucked in rent-free accommodation! I can't stand it much longer. When I was a lad, the workers had to struggle for a living, but now the bleeders (damn bosses) keep on making life easier for us. I'm not having it. I'm going to draft a letter of complaint to the union boss! Tungsten bloody carbide drills, indeed! Hmmph.
Disconcerted reader, Siem Reap.
I didn't even ask for the bloody pay rise. If I'd wanted a bloody pay rise, I'd have bloody well asked for one. Damn cheek!

I think such a poll should either be family or single oriented.
Having said that, since 5 years that I am married with kids I still spend the same monthly 3k as when I was single (all living costs included but air fares)
I could always use more but it is a very comfortable budget in SHV, and I can always remember how much good time that bought me during the many years I wasn't a family man.
Having fixed income It helps me that we are in a deflation period but I am starting to be wary of what will comes after that.
For now it also allows to easily spot greedy merchants and service providers that keep upping their prices.

I think Springrain is trying to say something here. I wonder what it is.springrain wrote:For me, it's becoming (absurdly) cheaper to live here. Well, I am in HCMC every week. Sure, taxis may be marginally cheaper. Hotel rooms and dining out are not even close. A good Western restaurant in HCMC will set me back at least $ 60 in HCMC for two (no wine), I'd be hard pressed to spend that sort of money here in Temple Town.dirtymacca wrote:I have to disagree... I still find life cheap here compared to say HCMC.
I can go from the aiport to District 1 in aircon comfort for $6.00 ... PP to the Riverside is a min of $7.00...
PP has a $ economy and all is linked to that.. a $1.00 is the norm... a $0.50 is considered a bargain.
In HCMC you can get "happy hours" with a free flow of beer for about $5.00 for 3 or 4 hours... (how many beers can you drink in 1 hour)

I spent around 3000-4000 a month as a single man in Phnom Penh. Now I spend the same in Singapore though I have a much better quality of life which includes access to things like sidewalks, public parks with trees, ambulances, real hospitals, real police, subways, reliable internet, hygienic food, real products, etc.
Cambodia is the #1 or #2 most expensive country in ASEAN for things like phones, computers, cars, internet, any kind of imported food or beverage.
You take a taxi from HCMC airport to district one for $6. A shorter trip from the airport to the riverside in Cambodia runs punters $12 now. A can of Coke at a mart in Bangkok is $0.28 compared to $0.50-0.55 in Cambodia. I got my laptop in Singapore for $500 less than the cheapest place in PP wanted. My phone was $250 cheaper.
I know rich khmer guys in PP who fly to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok when they want to buy any electronics or fashion items since it's still cheaper that way even with additional airfare and hotel changes.
Even the prostitutes are cheaper in Singapore! In Geylang it's $35US a go and it's totally legal, the women are tested weekly and they're better looking than the worn out single moms that wash up at Airforce bar asking for $50.

Spending more than 2k a month, that has to include a lot of jet travel, limos, high class chicks and fancy dining venues, and a health insurance covering getting flown in a chopper straight to Bumrungrad I hope, cause the local hospitals are still on to mostly using Whiskey and a saw I've been told.
How so, a reasonable fully serviced western style apartment will cost around $600-$1200 per month depending on location. Another $400 or so for utilities and (in house) food. Dining out at a reasonable restaurant once a week, another $400 and another $400 or so for going out for drinks etc during the week. Add another $500 for incidentals such as health insurance, visas, clothes and etc, gives between $2300 - $2900 a month for fairly modest living.pablomiguelgarcia wrote:Spending more than 2k a month, that has to include a lot of jet travel, limos, high class chicks and fancy dining venues, and a health insurance covering getting flown in a chopper straight to Bumrungrad I hope, cause the local hospitals are still on to mostly using Whiskey and a saw I've been told.
And I don't know why people keep trashing the hospitals, this is not 1995. While health coverage countrywide has still a long way to go. There are a few good health care options in Phnom Penh. Central Hospital being one.

My costs are roughly as follows:
1150 for rent, wifi, maid service, cable etc in a very nice apartment in the best part of town
1000 for cash in pocket all month from which beers, meals out, groceries etc are paid
$100 for getting around town
$10 mobile data costs
I have overseas expenses which are separate but this is all I spend in Cambodia and I'm eating ou most nights.
