WakeThis Charming Man wrote:I'm in an online rut. The interwebby thin has tens of millions of sites and yet every morning I long onto the same few sites, usually in the same order:
1) khmer440 for the latest input, sensible and vladesque
2) Bbc to find out what's happening at home and around the world
3) Phnom Penh Post as above but re my new home
4) CNBC to see how poor I'm becoming
5) various banking and investment portals to have it confirmed
And that's pretty much it. Then I'm stuck for ideas.
What's your morning habit? Give me some new ideas please.

Man, you guys are weird, or is it me?
I go to Hong Kong Observatory and Guam Meteorological site.
Then I hit some porn for anything new.
Then I go to Reddit.
Then I go to Iranian news.
Then I check for more new porn.
Then I check the movies I want to watch for the day so I can start them streaming and all be ready after a couple hours.
Then I check for new and old porn.
Then I google myself.
Then I go to Coober Pedy news to watch funny shit.
Then I go to NYT to read some of that.
Then I go to some more porn sites, just to make sure I didn't miss anything.
Then I take a cold shower.
Then I go to K440 to see what I can slip past the mods while they are still waking up and grumpy and can't be fucked to read my posts.
I don't have FB, email, Linkedin, or twitter.
Then I check all banking stock exchanges.
Read scientific journals.
After that it becomes creepy, but that is my basics.

3 different mail accounts (personal, university, professional) using mu4e as a mail user agent.
RSS Feeds for news using Elfeed. I have about 200 feeds on different topics including Cambodia, Information Security, Environment, Science, Terrorism, Peacekeeping, Academic, Newspapers like The Guardian, Australian ABC, SBS, etc. RSS is the fastest way to scan lots of news. The link to the IT and Techy Forum has suggestions for RSS for most people. Feedly or TheOldReader. Howard Rheingold, an information guru, swears by Netvibes.
Twitter is good for breaking news. I use Twittering Mode in Emacs for that. For Cambodia news you might want to follow these people and the hashtags #Cambodia and #rightskh. Most of them are still active.
LinkedIn for some networking.
Facebook is mainly for shite and to keep up with friends around the world. The main reason I stay on it. Posting news on Facebook makes you a cognitive slave. ( I suppose that is true on 440 as well. ) A lot of people don't check their email regularly, but they check Facebook.
I watch a lot of YouTube documentaries. If I find an author I like, I put their name into YouTube, and often find they have given a talk somewhere. Google and TED talks can be good. If you are interested in history Conversations with History is a good site.
I listen to a few podcasts including Long Now, Kings College War Studies, along with Sources and Methods. For computer nerds Security Weekly is pretty good.
The TV is in the family area which is usually tuned to Khmer Karaoke. So I tend to watch Al Jazeera's live stream once a day for news. Their Middle East reporting on Yemen or Isreal is suspect but it tends to have actual news as compared to CNN which is mainly gossip. BBC is slightly better than CNN.
Khmer440 of course!
I tend to read mostly on the desktop. With Twitter for the mobile phone. I have a Nexus 7 tablet but I rarely use it, except to read .pdf's or epubs. I am about to resurrect my ancient EeePC 701 4G as a disposable device which I can carry around. It is light enough, but has an actual keyboard unlike most tablets. With Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS I'll have security support until 2017.

Recently ( the past 12 months) I've been using my smart phone a lot more and playing a few mobile games, which I've never really done before. Other than that, it is visits to only the same few websites
1- Reddit
2- Facebook
3-Khmer440
But from these websites, I am usually always linked out to 2 or 3 other webpages while browsing.
I checked back in on www.stumbleupon.com and seen how it was doing as I haven't logged into it in years. Still pretty cool if you want different websites based on your topic suggestions. I visit when I get bored of the routine above.
Happy Monday,
DM

When I get up I check on my phone my email, Facebook, Instagram (surprised no one else seems to use that), and then BBC for any breaking news that could have happened overnight.
Once I'm at the office I get through work emails and then check in on K440, and actually read BBC and Washington Post (gave up on New York Times after they started charging), and Foreign Policy (which I do pay for as it has a lot of great articles, and I get a morning briefing from them). At some point during the day I'll probably do research on an upcoming trip, and search different sites for what's going on around town.
People may be interested in http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/ which is a blog with good travel tips (written by a 25 year old whose job is basically to fly around for free. Rolling Stones article on him here.)
And at some point I'll get an article emailed to me from my wife as she's looking through random things at work, probably from http://www.boredpanda.com/
