https://www.cambodiadaily.com/news/wate ... ves-98935/Phnom Penh’s annual Water Festival has been canceled for the fourth time in five years, with the government citing low water levels and drought as the reason for calling off the event, according to a statement released on Saturday.
However, a senior opposition lawmaker and a political analyst cast doubt on the reasoning for the decision, suggesting the government does not want to have hundreds of thousands of people descending on the capital during a politically tense time.
Each time the Water Festival is cancelled, what happens to the budget that was originally allocated to it?
According to HE:Cambodian wrote:Each time the Water Festival is cancelled, what happens to the budget that was originally allocated to it?
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/national/r ... ng-out-dryFurther justifying the decision, Hun Sen noted that areas along the river lack adequate water to farm rice, and ordered the Ministry of Economy and Finance to reallocate the festival’s budget to buy fuel to operate water pumps that would irrigate dry rice fields.
What's the draught of these boats? Around 30 CENTIMETERS?Having consulted with the Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, he said, the water level of the Tonle Sap will have fallen to 4.2 metres by the time of the Water Festival.
“The water level is so low that they cannot row the boats,” he continued.

Hahahaha. That made me laugh as much as the anecdote in HE's Cambodia where he turned up to an Anti-Corruption Unit hearing to declare his $1,150 monthly salary in a deadpan voice in front of journalists, before heading out and speeding away in his blackened window Merc limo.
Gotta love that chutzpah.

Does anyone know if there will be races in other provinces that week?
I can only talk for Siem Reap where officials were going from business to business to collect sponsorship money. This was yesterday (so after the decision made by HE to call off the water festival in PP).cambodgerodge wrote:Does anyone know if there will be races in other provinces that week?
Today someone told me Hun Sen is 'afraid of the ants'. So that's the way at least some Cambodians look at it. The person I talked to is a simple farmer on the banks of the Mekong river.
