The joys of a colourful past. No doubt your eloquence has served you well.Lirsumis wrote: ↑Thu Nov 18, 2021 1:43 pmI don't usually write in third person, either. I'm a little poleaxed by stumbling across this, while trying to track down David from Broken Bricks, and other dissolute old souls in a kind of 'I wonder what they're up to now' jag. A trip down memory lane indeed.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Oh my god! Every time I saw a camera I gave the biggest, shit-eatingest grin I could. I was BITTERLY disappointed that the one front page I got to see inside (courtesy of Nigerian Godfather Peter Brown) was that same paper which had a picture of me facing away from the camera, big, baldass head in hands. Delighted to hear that my puerile arrogance was given the space it deserved (momentary vicarious celebration in a paper hungry for stories that weren't rape or corruption). Only poor Herve's face was visible, looking like a frightened weasel. So pleased to hear my insufferable visage made it onto the broadsheets.
The whole time I was locked up (which was formative, useful, and calming - definitely not the norm; many better men died in there, some in my arms) I kept telling myself "Well, this is bad, but at least it's not high school in Australia."
Everything prior to and during Cambodia was an unfortunate kerfuffle. You don't end up turning 25 in Prey Sar without a considerable amount of prior kerfuffleage. Survived, thrived, and grew, though. Fond memories of all of it, good and bad, out and in.

So youre refamiliarising yourself with the prevailing dynamics for a return to your old wicked ways as soon as voa are reintroduced.
Hi Ben
I don't recall ever having met you, or Hervé, or Phillipe, but for a short while i was in regular contact with Gaby before he went AWOL. Figured he had been busted.
I quite liked him, calm guy. We used to play pool at cali2. He never once tried to rip me off.
Do you know what happened to him?
Tia if ever

I was a confused, profoundly ill, and angry young man. The experience as a whole left me wiser, but then as now, I never had the heart (or lack thereof) to really make a go of profitable wickedness. I'm better for my time in Cambodia, but I've no plans to return. What! wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 5:21 amSo youre refamiliarising yourself with the prevailing dynamics for a return to your old wicked ways as soon as voa are reintroduced.
And Andy, I'm not sure what happened to Gaby exactly, but as you say, he was a damn fine fellow. Last I heard he was alive and well, unlike Danny, another part of that extended clique, who I'm told took his own life. Amusing Gaby story: I didn't have any money or way of contacting my family from prison, so I got word to Gaby and gave him my mum's email address. I was arrested in mid-March.
By the time he got around to emailing my mother to tell her I was in a Cambodian prison? April first. She thought it was a tasteless prank.
