The man arrived at Middlemore Hospital in south Auckland on Wednesday with a problem relating to the piercing.
A Fire Service spokesman confirmed an Otahuhu crew was called to the hospital because the medical team did not have the necessary tools to cut through the stainless steel device.
"We were asked by Middlemore medical staff to help," he said.
"I can confirm that Otahuhu [fire crews] have a Dremel tool, and it was a Dremel tool that they used."
Dremel tools are hand-held mechanised cutting tools able to cut through dense metals.
"Traditional ring cutters are made for softer metals," the spokesman said.
"We have equipment that can remove rings that are a bit more heavy duty than what the hospital has."
The man's medical condition was not known.
