I was thinking the same. He has a police report etc and he's not begging as such, he is selling photos. I like that photo above, but I don't think my budget will stretch as far as buying artwork or charity this month.

If you are a girl, you can work as a waitress in Sundance and be home in 2 weeks.
If you have a big leg you can be home in 6 weeks.
If you get injured and taken to Calmette, you could end up in the Philippines.
If you get drunk with a bleeding head around 3:30AM, a girl in tuk tuk will bring you to a safe place.
But you could also lose your shorts and shoes and have to steal flip flops.
If you try to sell pictures???

No, it doesn't seem legit. "Stranded traveler" is one of the most common scams in the world. The mere fact that he filed a police report doesn't make it much more credible to me. Anyone can go to a police station and report something.horace wrote:Seems legit, no ?
Moreover, he claims that he was robbed just yesterday but he already has signs made up in English and Khmer about his plight, and he has the photos all ready to sell. the fact that he's selling something relatively worthless instead of flat out begging doesn't make the robbery story any more believable to me.

How do these guys make money? Surely the cost of every day begging in accommodation, food etc. is higher than what they make?
Why choose to live in squalor unless you can't avoid it?

I never understand these things. Who walks around with everything they have? I mean if your staying long term in Cambodia then get a bank account or if your backpacking put your money in your home bank account...Or at least some of it. People seem to lose their common sense when they leave their home countries. If you wouldn't walk around Moscow, London or NYC with all of your money than why would you do it in Phnom Penh or anywhere else for that matter.

You might be surprised how much sympathy a white guy "down on his luck" can attract here. Just witness the huge number of local women on that Facebook page who want to go and help him. It's been written about on here before, and I still find it weird how a foreigner can get $20 donations, while local beggars get 1000 riel. If he's doing this more than a few days we'll know.penisjokeforaname wrote:How do these guys make money? Robbed of 300 bucks and a phone and he's suddenly destitute? Hmm
I bought some photos off a Japanese guy on Elizabeth Street about 10 years ago. He had a pretty sweet Nikon range finder and some great shots. He said he was spent a few days in each place he visited 'busking' by selling pics. Helped pay for more film and prints.

He does seem to be a very well organized victim, right down to anticipating possible skepticism about his story, and not only promptly securing documentation to prove it, but putting it on display to allay any doubts that passers-by and other potential contributors may have. That's forward thinking.gavinmac wrote:No, it doesn't seem legit. "Stranded traveler" is one of the most common scams in the world. And by god where did he get the money to file the police report - they don't come cheap

I agree. Totally unbelievable story.
Besides, why would losing $300 and an iPhone impact his ability to fly home? Was his flight tickets stolen too? His ATM cards? If he can afford the few bucks to pay for a police report he can afford to contact friend and family back home to get money sent over.
