Just stumbled upon that KT article about the Khmer martial arts, Moha Yutkrom Khorm, mostly because of the badass picture on the frontpage of their Youth Today edition.
Looks like it's a lesser known cousin of Bokator, and the angle is very much on the young woman who's passionate about it.
The author is presumably a young Cambodian, so the article, while not bad, is a bit shallow on content but that's a good effort to bring this martial arts (never read about Yutkrom Khorm, usually, it's Bokator that is the darling of culture magazines) to a broader audience.
Anybody else knows about this form of combat?

And gratuitously, just for Jamie.... (hint: it says in the article where she can be found )

Some of the demonstrations and photos are pretty impressive!

Probably will turn out that it's a Malaysian martial art then, if it comes from the KT!

What is she, Sub-Zero's wife?
I've never heard of it and it's kind of interesting, but the problem with Bokator and this one is that it all comes off (to me) as purely for show. It's basically a "movie" martial-art and at times I also have a some trouble believing it was ever used effectively in combat back in the day. The whole jumping over someone's knee and giving an elbow to the top of the skull (one of the hardest places on the body and a spot where some soldiers likely had some forms of protection) is totally over the top. Looks cool, but did anyone ever succesfully pull that off against an opponent...? Doubt it. In that clip of the soldiers performing it, you can tell it's all staged and the back elbows would have zero power in them. As with most of these martial arts "demonstrations", the 2v1 are totally unrealistic as no fight ever ends up like that. The same goes for 95% of other martial arts (boxing/kickboxing, karate, judo etc). As a sport, sure. Sounds cool. But for real fighting? Unarmed combat is where it's at.

No wonder I had that weird girl crush on her.LexusSchmexus wrote:What is she, Sub-Zero's wife?
As for the rest, I agree that it looks more acrobatic and theatrical than practical and I was thinking that, of anything, those guys could help usher a wave of locally produced stunts-packed action movies (loosely) inspired by Khmer history and myths.
