Breaking News: Ferry Capsized off Koh Rong Samloem
Just saw Facebook breaking news report in Khmer that a ferry carrying many tourists has capsized off the coast of Koh Rong Somlang after being hit by strong waves. The report said so far authorities have managed to rescue 11 but others are unaccounted for. It didn't say how many were on board, it just said "a lot".
I'm guessing those boats are often packed and have no lifejackets.
Not looking good.
Not looking good.
pew, pew, pew, pew!
Just saw that news too.
It is said that the speedboat ("hors-bord" in Khmer borrowed from French) has room capacity for 20 people, but it is not known exactly how many were on board.
Most of the 11 rescued people are women.
Hope it will turn out that they could rescue everybody.
It happened this morning at 10.35.

Well, I was supposed to go to Koh Rong Sanloem today but decided to opt out. Looks like deciding to come home yesterday to do CNY with the family and go to Wat Phnom last night to burn some incense paid off. The gods work in mysterious ways.
Sat on the bus on the way back from Sihanoukville yesterday talking to a couple of barang women who'd come back from KRS yesterday morning, and the told of high seas, a rough and scary ride and lots of boat sick passengers. Looks like they were lucky too.
I sure hope they are able to recover everybody, but with high seas, dodgy safety equipment and very limited rescue capabilities, things could go very bad. Hopefully the boat didn't go down and people are able to cling to it until rescue arrived.

I think the correct name is Koh Rong Samloem. Might want to change the title if this going to be a major news story.

Looks like it was speed boat, not a ferry, and 6 Chinese, 2 Cambodians rescued after their boat capsized 12 miles (20 km) from shore.
Surprisingly, they were all wearing life jackets.

I also saw that Yahoo news picked it up.

Yes, it appears the ferry was used as a rescue boat:

That's a photo of a 2015 story about Indonesia sinking Vietnamese shark poaching boat.boomer wrote:

I guess TVFB just used a random picture to illustrate?
The Instagram photo that Gavinmac linked to indicates that there were 2 boats that capsized. Maybe one has the 6 Chinese visitors and there's another one with more passengers?boomer wrote:18km from the mainland probably, but within swimming distance from KRS i think...
