You are very interesting though.LexusSchmexus wrote:If we go by your definition, every bar or restaurant has "grey girls". Pretty much everywhere I've ever been the staff have been happy to engage in conversation with me.

That's putting it delicately.youngwill100 wrote: You're right, Chez Rina is not strictly a hostess bar like the others listed.
Popped my head into a b-day party they were hosting last year and lets just say that a number of the female faces were VERY familiar.
Wasn't sure what the scene was, whether they were retired or not, felt uncomfortable, so ducked out and headed over to Rose bar, where a man knows whats what.

What ever happened to smiley and his stabby wife?Jamie_Lambo wrote:FTFYyoungwill100 wrote:Firstly, I have a vested interest in some of the following bars, but I genuinely believe that they are some of the better hostess bars around... the staff are friendly but not pushy, you won't get hassled for ladydrinks, your bill won't be 'padded', the music won't be deafeningly loud, and the toilets are clean. As to the attractiveness of the staff, that's in the eye of the beerholder...agincourt wrote: So this bar called "The Office" sucks now,
so serious f*ckin' question:
What bars would you recommend NOW?
Loco Bar street 130
Honeypot Bar street 130
Angry Birds Bar street 130
Chez Rina street 98
Golden Vine street 108
Peaches bar street 5
Ps, apologies for the off-topic post
ahhh Golden Vine is the other one i was thinking about, only been there once but couldnt remember the name, was meaning to go back and have another few drinks there on my recent visit, nice atmosphere there and friendly staff

The scene at ChezRina is that it is ex-hostess owned and many of their customers are hostesses on their days off or ex-hostesses with their boyfriends/husbands or out with the girls spending their husbands'/boyfriends' money. It's a place where they can go and drink cocktails in an upscale setting without being judged by upper class Khmers because they are dressed like tarts or because they accompanied by a 55 year old white guy in shorts, socks and sandals.gibbon arms wrote:

@ gavin - Ha, ha. I know that, but couched my post,
as I had a feeling of trepidation that I might be set upon by what I figure to be a disproportionately large number of 440's membership that happen to fit this relationship dynamic exactly:

I think that's wrong. It's more nuanced that that. I once created a ten point balancing test for determining if an establishment was a hostess bar. Larry's 110 St. bar even escaped the label; you needed to meet six criteria and they only met five.LTO wrote:I figure any place with 'lady drinks' can be counted as a hostess bar of some sort, or is that wrong?

Hmmm, I take exception to that. I'd like to see how you quantified and qualified the data.gavinmac wrote:Larry's 110 St. bar even escaped the label

No! We all know that most of 440's readers, and PP expats in general, are clean-living professionals.gibbon arms wrote:@ gavin - Ha, ha. I know that, but couched my post,

I am not well versed in the nature of hostess bars and will likely come out looking naive in a discussion about the subtle differences. Perhaps you could post a link to your essay. That said, I can definitely see the difference between a place like Larry's and, say, Double D. Yet in both places I have to pay extra for a 'Lady Drink' so that some female there in their employ will spend her time with me in the bar. Is that not what a 'hostess' is, and a 'bar' she is working in? How is that not a hostess bar. In non-hostess bars I can buy a drink for my friend or the bartender or the girl sitting next to me without having to pay a premium to the bar. Aren't these various places with females who will spend time with you in exchange for buying Lady Drinks just different styles/levels of 'hostess bar.'gavinmac wrote:I think that's wrong.
