Yes, but the fish was questionable at best for consumptionjm wrote:Lake Erie is a thing with fish.

I commiserate with PN’s sentiments, but this “attitude” appears NOT to be exclusive
to privileged foreign students, but extends also to homegrown ‘murican kids too.
A retired feminist professor recently told me that she felt this
fourth wave feminist social justice warrior movement will cannibalize itself.
I actually don’t understand it and stopped trying.
A good kick in the ass worked in the old days.
But I understand prahocalypse now’s relevant point:
Andy’s nipples are brown and
Nirvana and Lara Apsara’s are not brown.

I'm not sure what your point is. Dominant cultures have always tried to impose their way of doing things on minorities, but have also borrowed certain elements from them at the same time. You're talking as if white people are the only people to do this, while in fact we weren't the first and won't be the last. There are tons of examples of this in Chinese, Indian, Persian, Greek, Mesoamerican cultures/history and so forth... Cultural borrowing has been prevalent since the dawn of time and isn't all bad given that it's allowed humans to develop new technologies and expand their knowledge. It's influenced literally everything including clothing, art, science, architecture, language, weapons and so on. It goes way beyond the narrow scope being described here.Cynome wrote:White people like to take from others (see history). If it's not other people from other countries, it's their land, resources, or even their culture (see history). I've seen many expats get Chinese tattoos without even being able to read the languages, get to China and feel that they are better than them.
Do all white people do this? No. Do all people do this? Well, there's a grey area...
Oh, and people who visit other countries and don't take into account that the said countries try to accommodate them shouldn't travel. These people go out of there way to make places more expat friendly. So, they should keep that ignorant and self-important shit at home.
I've never heard this. What are you talking about? Care to enlighten me regarding the African references on US dollars? You really do sound like someone doing an arts undergrad.Cynome wrote:Yes and no. The American dollar has nothing but African references on it...Yet, blacks have been treated more differently than any other culture in the US. Oh, and in Japan they kinda think that people who are extremely fascinated with their culture are somewhat idiots and traders to their own. But I get where you may get that idea.
When we eat together, we pretty much always get a table for four and sit diagonally from each other. We also make eye contact for no more than 2 seconds at a time. Just two totally straight guys eating breakfast together.prahocalypse now wrote:The fact that you know this is gay.LexusSchmexus wrote: Gavinmac has bacon with his breakfast, not sausages. So there are four dudes at the table, but you are insisting the two "straight" dudes sit diagonally from each other...hmmmm.LexusSchmexus wrote: When we eat together, we pretty much always get a table for four and sit diagonally from each other. Nothing wrong with that LS; just making sure I get the Phnom Penh protocol down right.
Gavin's tuk tuk sitting rules had me confused before.
P.S. If a man can't look you in the eyes for more than two seconds,
he's not only gay...he's a pussy too.

I agree with the sentiments of others here, it is ridiculously quixotic to think any culture can be 'preserved' or 'protected' in the age of information and globalisation.
Here is an example of Asians appropriating western culture:
Gobshite should get a back full of Khmer Sanskrit - no more stupid than his Long Beach stable mates and their idiotic Olde English font gang tattoos.
Railing against 'cultural appropriation', is probably the only thing that unites the hard ends of the spectrum - from dreadlocked hippies to white supremacists.
...and both groups can fuck right off with their anti-reality.

pew, pew, pew, pew!
AFAIK, Japanese women have a variety of nipple pigmentation ranging from pinks to browns.
WRT cultural appropriation, it's more about 'misusing' culturally specific items like this:
This issue with something like that is the restricted nature of the item - they aren't just something you pick up at Target. They need to be earned by the bearer, and it's a recognition by a community of a particular status within that community.
An example of where this isn't appropriate (it's a stretch, but come with me on this), is the guys who run around in fatigues and wear war medals. They haven't earned it, they aren't a part of that community, it's particularly disrespectful to those who are veterans, and have earned the right to wear medals. Is it appropriate for someone to appropriate heroism/valour? No. Should they get lambasted and shamed for appropriating restricted cultural symbolism? Yes. And they do, when caught.
Of course, no one thinks blondie at the Big Day Out watching wearing a tassled bikini top and native american headdress from Target thinks she's trying to pass herself off as a native american. But the restricted nature of cultural certain dress, customs, etc, is where fascination and celebration of other cultures becomes appropriation.

The jarheads wigout if you confuse the two.
@epidemiks
Interesting...
I believe the students yelling at the professor in the video I posted actually
involved a Pocahontas costume during their Halloween, which was deemed a micro-aggression or something
like that. I'm too stupid to fully grasp the situation.

I can confirm this fact.

My point was I thought it was a tattoo of the USMC motto so was confused that he said it was a tribute to his family, unless they are all military army, sorry navy. Or whatever it is.
pew, pew, pew, pew!
The Khmer text is a tribute to his father who is Cambodian....learn to f**kin read!
