Anybody Else Still Waiting For Their Cambodian DL ?
Since the end of Nov for me. Any chance of getting my money back ? I'm pissed off that I can't rent a car if I head back to the States for a visit.

Took one month for mine in Siem Reap, would the USA recognise a Cambodian licence any way?

My thought exactly. I find it extraordinary to think the Cambodian license would be valid in the west especially if you've never taken lessons or a test like most Cambodians.

Unless you wish to make the rental company staff have a good laugh, you're Cambodian DL is utterly useless outside of Cambodia. I still hand it to people all the time because they find it fascinating, but there's not a chance in hell anyone would accept it as anything other than a novelty.

It took one month the last 3 times. It's something about the PM suspending DLs because they are too expensive. The US Embassy says that if I get an Int. Driver's Permit as well, I'm good to go.

You should be able to use one as a Cambodian, with a functioning creditcard.
The US allows visitors/tourists to rent cars, and drive them with a foreign license.

A cambodian licence doesn't yet permit you to get an International Drivers Permit - they've started the process to be part of the IDP system, but it's not confirmed yet.wackyjacky wrote:It took one month the last 3 times. So you will still need another proper licence to get the IDP, and there's the issue. It sounds like you don't have one.

http://cambodia.usembassy.gov/driving_i ... in-the-u.s "Foreign Driver's Licenses Motorists visiting the United States from countries that have ratified the Convention on Road Traffic, may use their own valid driver licenses to drive in the United States. Visitors who intend to rent an automobile in the United States are advised to obtain an International Drivers Permit prior to their departure from Cambodia. These licenses/permits can be useful in connection with renting a car or in emergencies such as traffic violations or auto accidents, particularly when a foreign language is involved.
These licenses/permits must be obtained prior to departure for the United States. For more information, please contact your local Driver's License Office." ..... Why the fuck the worthless bastards post this I don't understand. Apparently, Cambodia hasn't signed the 'Convention On Road Traffic' & only 20 countries have. So I have no fucking clue. My Cal DL expired a couple months ago. I'll do more digging, the answer is probably here on 440 someplace. ps: Now I'm reading that Cambodia & 72 other counties did ratify the treaty, despite the fact that the Embassy's link to the treaty doesn't include them. This is confusing. Some other BMs have used the Cambodian DL in the US. More digging..... ps II: Wikipedia doesn't list Cambodia, but according to the UNTC itself, Cambodia ratified in in 1956. There are 102 counties listed now. LINK: https://treaties.un.org/Pages/ViewDetai ... g5&lang=en

My ex used hers in Australia and also used it to get the probationary period waived when she got her Australian licence.
Note to self: Must be nice to morons.

Thanks. I'm using Ana in Sihanoukville & she's saying that people have been waiting longer than me. I'd try this method because you've got nothing to lose and maybe a license to gain. Go to Lucky Lucky in Phnom Penh (or another recommended agent) and ask them to find your license for a fee. Also ask about the IDP. But it seems to me Cambodia doesn't offer this yet, according to various readings of FB pages over the last couple of years.
If you have a Thai license, an IDP is easy to get, 500 baht.

Oh, sorry then, didn't realize it would be taken seriously. Might have to get a renewal, could be handy in a pinch.

They did in Aus when I was there recently. My Aus licence was stolen and I sheepishy handed the car rental agent my Cambo, which he scrutinised thoroughly but accepted.Steve Zodiac wrote:Took one month for mine in Siem Reap, would the USA recognise a Cambodian licence any way?
