The fact that three of the five have decided to go home suggests they are economic migrants looking for a better life - not that there's anything wrong with that. If they were genuine refugees fleeing wars and oppression in their home countries, they wouldn't be going back to those home countries now. You can't have it both ways.

i didn't take LJ's comments to be referring to the limited cambodian sample rather to asylum seekers generally coming to australia...

When these mostly Muslim refugees are in Indonesia or Malaysia (both Muslim countries) they are not in fear for their lives and they are in a country with a far more similar culture for them than Australia.

The majority of Indonesians are Muslims, but they are Sunni Muslims. Not all asylum seekers are Sunni. There is a history of persecution of Shia, Ahmadiyya and other non-Sunni Muslims in Indonesia. This has happened as recently as January 2016.

You're also ignoring the glaringly obvious fact that the sample you are referring to comprises only 5 people. Five. But then you draw general conclusions about ALL refugees..:

You take an incident involving 3 people, none of whom you know basically anything about, and support their opponents, who have shown the world time and time again what liars they are.

One has to admit that these 5 people were the dumbest of the crew at the camps, no one else would listen to the lies or could not see through them. The mere fact that AUS represented Cambodia as a developed country with good healthcare, PLUS the fact they had to pay such a huge sum to make the deal...what else do you need to realise teh whole thing stank, Mugabe's involvement?

The Australian immigration policy has to be the joke of the century. Boat people who endevour to land on Australian shores are escorted to detention centres on Christmas Island, Nauru or Manis Island(Papua New Guinea), never mainland Australia. The Australian government sees fit to 'bribe' these countries, at exhorbitant cost, to 'temporarily' house them until a re-location country can be found.

The Australian government has provided the Cambodian Government with entitlements of $A55m to repatriate the on forwarded asylum seekers. Now here's the punchline, so far 5 refugees have been sent, but 3 of those have opted to return to their countries of origin, leaving a remaining 2. In all, a costly exercise in the extreme, approx $10m per person, and a highly convoluted farcical solution.

Why should the Aussie taxpayer not see red?

Rubbish. They have tolerated them because of their natural resources, mostly at the bidding of the US/NATO members.

I seem to recall a few famous politicians saying what they would do to Saudi if they had no oil.

You are starting a straw man argument. The issue is not about Saudi, or any other member of the UNHCR. It is about the report compiled and comments made by them and numerous other human rights organisations, which are mostly accepted by anybody with 2 brain cells or more.

The issue of their right to asylum aside, any fecker that thinks that the deal with Cambodia was above board is retarded, why all the secrecy, why all the denials, why all the lies? Are these the hallmarks of a transparent deal?

I wouldn't buy a used car from any member of the Australian government, worst in Australia's history I'd probably get a better deal from Mugabe.
