A few months ago I took what probably should have been a $1 or $1.50 tuktuk ride (if I bargained), though I knew the guy would probably ask for $2, maybe $3 if he thought I was a tourist. But it was late, and I was a bit lit and had just had a $30 bar tab picked up by a friend and was in a generally good mood, so I decided before we stopped that I’d just give him $3 to be nice and easy. I separated off $3 to be ready to pay. The tuk stopped and I got out. The driver was already on his feet, not smiling and barked “$2!” I smiled and slurred (using a bit too much English) “hey how about I give you 3 instead?” Apparent not listening, he stood his ground and repeated “$2!” rather assertively. I smiled a little and said something like “Are you sure I couldn’t interest you in accepting 3?” Looking right through me, he repeated “$2!” So I held up the three dollars I had ready, peeled one off and put it in my pocket and said “OK, $2,” and handed him the money. He took it hesitantly, face slowly contorting as his brain began to function, realization setting in as I walked away. A few steps away I turned. He was standing there in silence, mouth open, that sheepish idiot’s smile on his face, staring at me. I walked back and gave him the last dollar. He said “thank you” meekly, smiling, cringing and looking at the ground. An hour later, sitting in Zeppelin alone, a beer and shot arrived that I hadn’t ordered. I looked up and the girl pointed at the door, where just outside that tuktuk driver was standing. He gave a small wave, smiled and walked away.

The other day i heard of a guy who got threatened with a wrench by a tuktuk driver who wanted more money after a drop off in Sihanoukville. Also heard from biz owners that they are sometimes refusing to negotiate on price/rigging.
Was the recent big push on pulling over barang on bikes a coincidence?
You don't get to be like Phuket tuktuk's mafia/300 baht minimum fare without having serious connections.

Here's a slightly different perspective re. Phnom Penh: I live on the outskirts of town, about 9 km from the centre, and i don't drink 'n' drive, so if i go out i use private transport. Afternoon or early evening, hailing a local tuktuk and getting into town is no problem and the fee I offer is always accepted. The problem arises when it's time to return home; then it's a crapshoot. If i'm lucky, I get a decent tukkie who gets me home for the price agreed before I get in. However, that's a 50/50 call - other times they really fuck me about, so now if i can, I book or hail a taxi.
The posts so far seem to be mainly from posters using tuks in the city centre, so I'm wondering if the problems are mainly restricted to that bad crowd rather than city tukkies in general. Whether that's a factor or not, I suspect the attitude of the wanker tukkies will cause more people to use taxis and cause the demise of the tuktuk industry in general, taking the decent guys down with them.

During Pchum Ben when the city was pretty deserted, I went out and managed to find only a moto home from the riverfront area after an evening on the piss. He took me about 2 km in a southerly direction, stopped, shouted at me to get off, and declared TTP was too far and just....drove off.
I half expected to be jumped about then when he split, but nobody appeared. I didn't pay him anything as he simply just drove off....I walked the few km remaining home at 2am....didn't see a single person the whole way back on the road or otherwise.
I notice those one piece vespa like plastic tuk tuks appearing around now. They haul ass, but are pretty cramped.

Saw a LHD London "black" Cab (it was yellow) for sale on eBay last year. Really wanted it.
So. Anyhoo, that's end of that anecdote....

Sorry, that's about a 7 minute walk each way. Do you have legs, they're so much cheaper?Alexandra wrote:Once I hailed a cab to bring me from freedom park to Monivong around Central Market and back to riverside near freedom park.

One of my favorite things about Bangkok was Grab Taxi. I actually liked the ap better than Uber. You can get whatever you want, moto, taxi, private suv, limo. They tell you how long, you watch the transport get to you plus you have their phone vice versa in case they get lost. It's really cool.
Does PP have uber now?

iirc one driver told me that he pays USD 18 (I hope I'm right) in rent per day. Whatever he makes on top is his cash. I think they do 12 hour shifts, so pretty sure they make some cash, although it's hard to estimate how many rides they get a day.On The Buses wrote:Does anyone know the economics of this? Do drivers get a salary, if so, how much?
I'd hate it if they were paying the price of the cheapness, and it would be nice if they were earning enough to take care of their families.
My driver to the airport was like a London cabbie. He even swots up on football teams - which was sadly lost on me, as I think it's all balls.
What's interesting is that whenever I take taxis - which is probably 2 times a week - the drivers seem to be on the phone constantly, either to regular customers or other drivers. They would sometimes also give me their number and ask me to call them directly next time, so pretty sure they shift around customers throughout their network of friends who are drivers etc.
I live north of the city and agree that there's a big difference in attitude and the aggression of haggling between the tuktuk guys out of town and those from the drinking and tourist spots. After dark, there are very few tuktuks here - you'd need to be lucky and catch one passing through.andyinasia wrote:Here's a slightly different perspective re. If I hail a random tuktuk while out anywhere in town, I can generally tell whether they frequently operate dealing with white guys on the riverside, 51, 271, etc, by their demeanor. I can also generally tell those drivers if I'm on a moto out and about and need to speak to the driver to get in / out of a space or get through in traffic... the attitudes range between an openly given distasteful disdain that's hard not to notice and to get past, and a solid and overbearing overt loathing... the stare associated with which is a definite 'Do Not Disturb Further' indicator.
I think wanker tukkies are the product of time spent dealing with wanker tourists and whiteys. Get away from those places and there's much much less of an attitude problem.
Taxis may take over if those tuktuks don't get the trade anymore, but I'd expect the taxi drivers dealing with their new trade to turn out developing the same attitudes in a few years time.

As a former cabbie, allow me to explain the medallion system and the so-called "mafia" as well as why and what Uber is doing to screw the working man.YaTingPom wrote:I used "mafia" in the colloquial form not literal.
I'm pretty sure the Mafia are not involved in a big way in the Taxi industry in NYC.
A medallion will cost upwards of $1 million USD so unless the mafia families are into investing (in 2004 one would cost $240k) I don't see how they could "control" the industry. There's better ways to launder money.
You see, as a career cabbie, your options are quite limited from a financial point of view. You're not an employee in practically all cases, you're a contractor who rents the cab from the company. So you eat what you kill, minus your costs. The one thing that allows for a "pension" of sorts is the medallion. The ONLY way to get one, is to be a cabbie for a long time, having put your name on the list, and continued to drive throughout. When I was driving, this was about 25 years. When time comes for a new round of licenses to be issued (based on population increases), then the next cabbie on the list gets to purchase his medallion, which costs very little money, but is worth quite a lot. When I was driving (this is in the early 1980's) the medallion would generally be sold to the various taxi companies and would get around $250,000 or more for the cabbie. Thus, it served as a pension. The companies were simply paying for the licenses, so if you want to call them a "mafia", then pretty much all businessmen are mafia.
Uber has now done what much of the "new" and "sharing" economy is based on. That is, take away the private benefits and place the burden on the public. So instead of having to pay for insurance and licensing that is required by the state, they've privatized that to the driver and taken the money that was otherwise costed in as profit for the small number of people who own Uber. The drivers get the same as a cabbie roughly, but no pension. And they take away the business from career cabbies in order to make a few bucks by working overtime but for regular pay.
