Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

Here's a great example of why pandering to cultural sensitivities is flawed. There are rights and wrongs in the world. The Chinese know this is wrong, or they should. Truly evil under any moral compass.
I know I'm unloveable. You don't have to tell me. I don't have much in my life, but take it - it's yours.

"Oh! Ha ha! You not understand Cambodia!". As they say, if I had a dollar for every time I heard that one.
However, it is a useful indicator - whenever I hear it I take it as confirmation of my suspicion that the speaker is indeed trying to pull a fast one. My usual response is "I understand Cambodia very well and I understand you even better."

I don't think 20 would have done it, but I could have kept adding a tenner until i saw the look in his eyes change.starkmonster wrote:You should have offered him $20 to come around to your way of thinking.Mr Lovejuice wrote:I had a Khmer director of studies tell me that corruption is part of Cambodian culture and that basically I was being racist by not accepting it.
Beat that!
I'm getting good at the Cambodian thing, because I managed to tell him to stuff his job without actually saying the words.
He was the guy from the other post on bad schools trying to charge $75 for an education licence.
I told him no problem, I have someone willing to lend me the money but they need a signed letter stating the cost and what its for with your name on it.
Lovely squirm on the guy, before he agreed and which 2 days later backed down on. I love winding these stupid cnuts up.

As I walked back from the local minimart yesterday in the blazing sun, a rough looking street dog with matted hair, sullen eyes and an odour like it had rolled in its own shit was lounging outside my gate. I showed the poor bugger some compassion, and it barked and went for my ankles.
Cambodia is often like that.

Even when they're out of their own element the sensitivity persists. Also the desire to always feel as if they're "winning" every exchange, no matter how minor. Thought of this thread while watching the following video (in this case the SE Asian is Thai).

Honestly, this is a country full of whore-mongers (and I'm not even talking about the expats), rapists, murderers, thieves and liars. Children have been murdered for earrings that their parents were stupid enough to let them leave the house with. The amount of Khmer men who cheat on their wives is insane. The amount of alcoholic deadbeats who will leave their kids hungry so they can go and have some fun is disgusting.
I don't have a lot of respect for Khmer culture, not their traditions but modern Khmer culture as it is now.

Is this Khmer culture, even "modern Khmer cultue," or the absence of it?WatchTheGrass wrote:Honestly, this is a country full of whore-mongers (and I'm not even talking about the expats), rapists, murderers, thieves and liars. You know what, you're right. It's less to do with the culture itself and more to do with their respect for it.LTO wrote:Is this Khmer culture, even "modern Khmer culture," or the absence of it?WatchTheGrass wrote:Honestly, this is a country full of whore-mongers (and I'm not even talking about the expats), rapists, murderers, thieves and liars. They don't respect their laws, they don't respect their environment, they don't respect other people let alone themselves. The only things that anyone here seems to respect are money, power or status.

It is totally out of control, pork-lemmings rushing to their deaths, neglecting their families to pursue the green dream.
I've never lived in a society where the whole damn caboodle seems so utterly pointless.
I'm sure this plays a part in the wilful lack of care so many expat deaths and slides into insanity are a result of.
Many care more about the buck than their closest relative's life.

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
Accusing people of things they clearly have not done and lying in court (both entirely without repercussion when found out) appears to be a part of local culture these days. Even 'witnesses' in the KR Tribunal have been caught talking through their behinds. Much of this is encouraged by the donor community in their role of ambulance-chaser.
