I once taught a class on conflict of interest in Government Institutions to a mixed group of senior officials, police, and military in Phnom Penh.
Nobody in the class understood the concept at all, and the question asked repeatedly was:
Then why work for the government if you can't help your family, friends, and facilitate side businesses? It's a waste of time and a stupid profession if you take that away.

Vlad has obviously set a trap and is trying to bait a grammar Nazi into correcting his punctuation on a thread not related to teaching.vladimir wrote: Years ago I had an external hard disk stolen from near the desktop computer in the Teacher's Room.
Well, who is going to take the bait and ask...?
"Which teacher?"
Not me.

A talented teacher would have seized this opportunity to teach the students. Vlad's inability to explain the difference between a factual statement and an opinion reflects poorly on his teaching skills or temperament.

Any Cambodian seemingly so defensive and nationalistic to make such a claim knows that Cambodia is full of thieves. Millions of them. They are called 'yuon.' Sounds like the Khmer thief tipped her hand.
Maybe leave everything to same but change the title of the course to a 'Confluence of Interests in Government.'Felgerkarb wrote:I once taught a class on conflict of interest in Government Institutions to a mixed group of senior officials, police, and military in Phnom Penh.

Have had similar problemsLexusSchmexus wrote: She got ultra defensive and played the "it's Khmer culture" card. Basically, the last resort of a scoundrel. Maybe some of the confusion stems from the Cambodians looking at all 'Whities' as the same group and do not recognise the massive cultural differences between us.
Maybe another factor is that the majority of Cambodians do not really have conversational contact with 'Westerners and the ones that do are, maybe not a true reflection of the wider population.
Just a thought, or two

Nothing but an opinionated tourist. The Pope spends more time in countries than I do ! It is also not my place to comment on a gentleman's dress. A real 23 minute wonder, that obviously knows little about ovens and cooking in Cambodia.

Khmer and Irish public officials have this entitlement in common. It's never seemed that strange to myself.Felgerkarb wrote:

Has someone edited out the first half of my post ? if so who? and why? and are people not supposed to be told when this is done?EdinWigan wrote:Maybe some of the confusion stems from the Cambodians looking at all 'Whities' as the same group and do not recognise the massive cultural differences between us.

I did because I edited out a load of posts that you were complaining about. I didn't realise you felt entitled to an explanation every time I make a mod decision that personally affects you. I'll put it on my list of things to do.EdinWigan wrote:Has someone edited out the first half of my post ? if so who? and why? and are people not supposed to be told when this is done?EdinWigan wrote:Maybe some of the confusion stems from the Cambodians looking at all 'Whities' as the same group and do not recognise the massive cultural differences between us.

In the meantime, your post above is off topic, exactly the thing you were complaining about.
