Walkabout closing soon - now closed
Yes, good story, Jackal.
I remember once, many years ago - pre-marriage, I hasten to add, waking up in the morning with some brass, and for one of the few times in my life having absolutely no idea where I was.
The room, as I recall, was quite nice, newly fitted out, with some kind of jacuzzi bath in it.
I wandered out onto the balcony, took in the corner street view and tried to figure out where the hell I was.
It took a few minutes (there were very few distinguishing features on that corner back then) to work out that I was in fact in the penthouse suite of the Walkabout Hotel.

I once walked out onto the balcony from one of the rooms at the Walkabout with two new close personal friends only to see the school kids from the school opposite staring at our walk of shame...

Hmmm. I wish I had a good Walkabout story. I never got ripped off there, by staff or girl. ... I remember the new year the proprietor spent in jail for a dispute with a well known pony-tailed riverfrontarian. ... Post 911 I used to worry about going in there on a big Jokers Wild Friday as it seemed like an ideal place to roll a grenade. ... I once walked in late evening and noticed a gun laying in the floor under a certain Irishman's bar stool. When I tried to point it out to him, he first looked like he was about to kill me, then realizing what I was saying, he became uncharacteristicly contrite and grateful (after collecting his weapon), and bought me several rounds. We were always on particularly good terms after that.
That's about all I can think of.

As far as I know, the MIB only ran security for a very short period. Just sayin...

I lived diagonally opposite it for awhile. I became quite attached to it as a neighbour. I could easily see the comings and goings from the upstairs rooms. I would chat with a couple of the girls when i saw them. Had a couple of late nights that finished with breakfast there.

My best walkabout stories are these.
I have never ever, not even once, set foot inside it despite being in Cambodia for almost two years now.
and
I had a bookmark saved for a long time in the browser of my old computer, something from gavinmac along the lines of "would you rather tell your mum you met your missus in a place called the cathouse or in a nice australian pub called the walkabout".

Just to clarify. My late nights (the sun was well up) were spent elsewhere. Walkabout was for breakfast

So what is the reason the Walkabout has closed its doors - for good. Is it because Glen is no longer with us ? if that's not the explanation I'd be interested to know why the place has shut down I always thought that it managed to make money over the years !!

I would guess that the lease contract ended and the landlord was asking for a modest rent hike of 200% or so.
Or if Glen owned the building maybe he sold it for a massive capital gain.
What's the betting on what will take its place? Mini-mart? Pharmacy? Restaurant?

Well the past two years were hardly its heyday. As many have mentioned already, it was one of the only, if not the only, 24 hour bar in the city for many years. So if you found yourself out and about at 4 am it was the only reliable option.WatchTheGrass wrote:
