Someone told me that the owner of the old Martini has bought the Walkabout business. No idea if it's true.

That actually described the place quite well and brought back a lot of old memories and captured that period onward the best yet It just got worse and worse when they let the old whores take over.Gilmore wrote:I can't say one positive thing about Walkabout. I've only dropped in their briefly twice in the past decade, largely due to a plethora of negative experiences in my first two years here.
Walkabout was always the nadir of the Sharky-Martini-Walkabout axis. The skanks who inhabited the place were the lowest of the low and the management and customers weren't much better.
My first experience with Walkabout was as a tourist in early 2004. After a session there, I woke the next morning with two horrifically ugly Vietnamese trollops in bed with me, though I couldn't remember bringing them home. They later admitted spiking my drink, but weren't able to find anything of value in my room.
Unlike Sharky and Martini, Walkabout management didn't bar known thieves. There was a notorious thief named Hang, who stole $3000 from a guy staying at Walkabout. She was barred permanently from the other two places for similar activity, but frequented Walkabout for years, though the management knew what she was doing.
The food was shit and the staff were surly hustlers, who kept expecting a tip every time you bought a drink, as chits weren't kept. One time I was short changed $20 after paying with a hundred. I kept the change on the bar and reported the theft, only to be accused of being a crook and hustler by Glenn, who said his staff would never do that. I'm sure many of you will say Glenn is a great bloke, but that wasn't my experience with him or his arrogant managers.
It was always interesting to walk past the toilet cubicles and smell the yama fumes wafting out or listen to the sounds of some skank being hammered inside. Good riddance to the shithole, but I guess it's too much to expect GSM to follow.

Used to be a decent drinking hole in its day.
Will it become just another Panda Mart?

Don't know how many times I was there. A 100 times, maybe? Never had a problem with staff, except for the usual enthusiasm for tips. As for the "talent", only had a problem with one particular Viet. For a 2-3 year period, roughly from 2007, I used to go there every night on my vacations. Then just stopped going since it was such a dreary hole.

always struck me as being a bit aloof and distant...maybe not a bad way to be in a place like that...Gilmore wrote:Glenn
i thought aussie bill was ok...a bit of a knockabout bloke who came across as one of the boys and i'm sure he saw it more as a hobby than a job...the khmer fella that followed him (forget his name) was a bit too much of a try hard for my liking and i'd heard reports that he was pretty shit to the staff...that was about as far as i got...managers
generally not a cheery lot and probably agree about being a bit in your face...staff
but in the early days there wasn't much around and i can see why it survived and at times flourished...the pool comp upstairs was a draw card for me even though the tables were pretty ordinary...for a while there it was fairly entertaining and that's with me looking on from a distance...
He's been in his room 35 years...time to let him out!

When I was talking to Glenn about the missing $20, he pointed to his Khmer manager who was sitting nearby.
"This bloke says he saw you pocket the $20. I'd trust him before I'd trust arseholes like you. We get pricks like you in here all the time".
I then stood up and turned my pockets inside out to show they were empty. The change remained on the bar where it had been slapped down minus the 20, with a $50 note on top and smaller notes underneath.
Glenn's response was to walk back to the cashier and check my $100 note to see if it was a forgery. On discovering it wasn't, he told me to fuck off.
When I next came in, a few weeks later, I noticed a new cashier was working. A regular drinker told me the previous one had been fired, along with several bar staff, for short changing customers. What a surprise!
Bill was probably the most sociable of the managers, but could also be arrogant and overbearing when the mood suited him.
On a couple of occasions, in 2004, Sharky owner Mike was behind the bar giving orders to staff at Walkabout. One of the skanks told me he was the real majority owner; not Glenn. Anyone know the real story?

I used sleep there when I first lived here if I was too drunk to drive home to chroy changvar.
Always got clean sheets and hot water for under $10. Would a have a few drinks, a smoke, some food and fall up the stairs.
One night some girl working below came up with me and while she was showering I (pissed as a fart and stoned to boot) put $1000 cash, my Visa card, passport, driving license and bike keys under the door mat for "safekeeping". Then I blacked out before the woman in the bathroom came outside, and woke up ten hours later to an empty room with $980, my Visa card, passport, license and keys under the door mat

Does this make "Walkabout Girls" a limited edition collectable now?

Now that's a fucking good one
A couple of weeks ago, coming home drunk I wrote a long post of the kind for this very thread, but I couldn't sleep because of it and came back to delete it before it was much noticed
So In a more subtile tone, in 2001 I rented by pure chance an appartment on the top floor of the opposite corner, discovering on the very first night where I was and keeping the flat for about 6 years...
In between being my bikes safe parking, seeing a girl from my place that proved to be a one time working girl and one of the best shag in my life, my partner being good friend with most khmer managers, my kicking the shit of a fellow french man in front of a full house etc. I have definitely plenty of stories in this sleazy as cambodia institution
