Ecstasy deaths in the west traced back to Cambodia
I just stumbled across this article. I'm not sure if it's been covered here before, but it's quite fascinating. In brief, a spate of ecstasy related deaths in the UK has been related back to Cambodia - the Cardamom Mountains specifically - where an essential agreement of MDMA, safrole oil, is commonly found in a tree from the region, the mreas prov.
Everyone knows about illegal logging, of course. I always thought it was solely about the timber. I had no idea there was a drugs connection also.

^ lol
Safrole extraction from the trees is lucrative and on occasion 44 gal. drums of it have been discovered hidden in Cambodian forest. Sassafras trees are not exclusively grown in Cambodia, but found elsewhere in Asia and also the US... praise the Lord

I've posted this here somewhere twice before, but it's always worth watching for those who still haven't:

I always wondered who was behind the acid house/ extacy boom from the mid 80s on. Now it becomes clear that the PRK were responsible all along. This safafras oil is obviously the culprit, and not the synthetic compounds that dealers make to circumnavigate existing legislation. I should have known all along.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Utter bollocks
Most deaths from so called Ecstasy are not actually MDMA so to trace them back to Cambodia is a flight of fantasy.
Yes, Cambodia is the main source of safrole, but good MDMA is relatively safe.
In recent times, the majority of deaths is due to PMA (para-Methoxyamphetamine)
Sooner the governments in the west grow some balls and regulate the lower level harm substances, the sooner deaths and hospitalisations will decrease

Glad they found the culprit, of all their dance floor related problems.
Wonder what else is hiding out there, in the Cambodian wilderness.

It says in that article that PMA is the reason they are dying but does not go into to any detail how they know it is from Cambodia, just that Safoil is used as a precursor.Stramash wrote:Utter bollocks

pew, pew, pew, pew!
It's The Telegraph - nothing more than a posh version of the Daily Mail and not good on factsYaTingPom wrote:It says in that article that PMA is the reason they are dying but does not go into to any detail how they know it is from Cambodia, just that Safoil is used as a precursor.Stramash wrote:Utter bollocks

It's safrole not safoil btw.
Safrole is a precursor for MDMA not PMA/PMMA.
There has been some suggestion that the use of anise oil in place of safrole gave rise to PMA but that's for another discussion.
PMA and PMMA are both very toxic but still the tabloids tend to lump them in with MDMA. MDMA is relatively low harm (compared to other susbtances)
Regulation/legalisation would see a form of quality control, would mostly eliminate PMA/PMMA and would see a huge reduction in emergency room visits and deaths

Yeah, safrole is pretty scarce these days hence the practice to instead make the precursor required for MDMA, PMA etc...therefore any link to Cambodia sourced safrole is disingenuous.

All comes back to stupid and regressive policy from the UN and from governments. Safrole isn't so much scarce at source - more that seizures have gone up (a huge amount of 50 tons seized in Thailand in 2010)
So many producers switch to anise/aniseed oil, which produces PMA/PMMA instead. Nasty shit and far more dangerous on a number of levels.
There are some slow changes to policy in many countries but what we really need is a whole new forward thinking global paradigm
