Highway Robbery
I have never had a phone stolen before, I have never even lost a phone before. I have broken two phones, one which got soaked and never recovered, and one that I dropped down two flights of stairs, but I have never had one stolen.
Having spent the morning in the peace and tranquillity of the Conservatory at Raffles la Royale, I decided to head over to the town apartment to make myself some lunch – a cheaper option than dining at Raffles by a long way, and it is only ten minutes down the road in BKK1.
As such, I popped the laptop in the bag, put my phone in my pocket and headed south down Street 51.
Around two or three blocks north of Sihanouk Boulevard, one man on a moto cut in front of me sharply, causing me to decelerate quickly and swerve slightly to the right to avoid him.
Almost as soon as it had happened, a second moto, bearing two men, swerved into me. The driver pushing me over, while the pillion passenger stuck his hand in my pocket and grabbed my phone – and just as swiftly, they were off.
Screaming a roar of rage, I opened the throttle up full and gave chase as fast as the bike could accelerate, swerving in and out of traffic I got within a block of them just before Sihanouk Boulevard, they could see me giving pursuit, probably half expected it. So they cut down a side street to the right. I skidded round the same corner giving hot chase to them, screaming and shouting, alternatively in English and Khmer; thief, thief, jao, jao, jao – along with a few other words and phrases that can not be used in mixed company, in either language.
They switched and changed directions at every intersection, North, South, East and West. On the wrong side of the road, driving the wrong way down one-way streets, all the while I was within a block of them and was actually starting to think I would catch them.
However, the single rider bike kept trying to run interference, slowing down and blocking the road, swerving suddenly, trying to buy time for the two person bike to escape with the phone.
At one point however, he overplayed his hand. While trying to cut me off from the left, to drive me into a parked car, I did not swing right, instead when he was in range I gave him a swift backhander with my left-hand to his face. Not particularly hard, I sacrificed power for accuracy, but it was enough of a shock to distract him and allow me to overtake him and engage in a direct pursuit of the two ahead.
At this point things were getting pretty hairy, we were whizzing in and out of lunchtime rush-hour traffic at 50kph to 70kph, not very safe or sensible at all.
It was at this type of speed that they cut through a red light across Monivong Boulevard, East to West – and narrowly avoiding being hit by several cars.
Still screaming and shouting abuse I launched myself after the through the red light (leaning on my horn continually) I also had a few near misses during the chase, how none of us had an accident or just got wiped out I do not know.
Unfortunately once across Monivong, they turned sharply into the much smaller Streets just South of Orussey Market, with the lead that they had gained in the suicidal run across Monivong Boulevard and the smaller streets, I lost sight of them, faced with a choice of three possible roads that they could have gone down I picked one at random and continued on, but they were nowhere to be seen.
I continued to circle round the back streets there for another 10 to 15 minutes, but it was clear, I had lost them and they were well gone by now.
My much loved Galaxy S6 edge plus was gone, after only having had it a few months.
Replacing it will make this a very expensive month.

Oh well, at least you managed to get a good story out of it.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Do the new smart phones not have a built in tracker system the same as laptops ?[ That can be activated by the owner ]

Maybe we all could contribute a few bucks, the story is worth it (Khmer440 Insurance).
Pity no video of the chase. But we're all glad you're ok.

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.

Yes I agree with Horace...Lara and I saw Playboy arrive just as we were leaving. Stinking hot when we left...both of us couldn't help but notice a high representation of Hyenas hanging around on motos in the shade. Enough for us to walk a good distance away until we flagged a mobile tuk tuk.
Sorry to hear about the taxed phone Playboy...lucky overall.

Don't mention the Giant Panda in the room.
Thanks for the warning, whenever I'm in PP I believe it will never happen to me..... But of course it can....
Sorry about your phone. Seems a nice one.

Sad to hear this happen to an experienced expat.
Another reason to be extra alert, when carrying valuables around here, whenever, wherever.
