Why do Cambodians pay so much money for English lessons?
Hi guys,
I am not in Cambodia, I am not planning going there, neither am I an English teacher. But I am just curious about one particular thing.
Why do Cambodians pay foreign English teachers so much money? As I understand, they are making a lot more money compared to local people, maybe even 10x more. What's the benefit for the country? Filipinos, Indians, maybe even many Pakistanis speak fluent English and it doesn't mean that their countries are more successful than for example Japan where many people struggle with English. I am not from an English speaking country, I learned English in school from "local teachers" as it is common in Europe. And when I came to the UK, I was able to communicate, find good jobs, etc. Would paying 10x more expensive dudes bring 10x better results? I don't think majority of expats in Cambodia are language experts or passionate linguists, are they? Who's in Cambodia actually got the money to pay them?
And another thing... Why do these expats spend so much money? Cambodia is supposed to be a cheap country, but spending $300 on rent doesn't sound super cheaply. You could find places anywhere in the world for that. You can find houses in north of the UK for about £400 or small flats for less than £300 a month, so it's not such a huge difference considering minimum/average wages in the UK and Cambodia.
Am I right that there are many bars for Westerners owned by Westerners employing Westerners so it has become some sort of a Western island within the country? So the people earning $1200 spend $5 on a dinner in a restaurant? That's quite close to European wages/prices - many European countries have the minimum wage below $700 (Portugal, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic) - and you would find cheap restaurants there too.

Some of us apparently can tell a $200 bottle of wine from a $12 so they need the cash & the rest is spent on air-con & cleaning ladies.

I too would like to hear from the Teflers. They need to justify their ridiculously high incomes and explain why they spend so much. Vlad and Scc - you guys can start please.
