After spending many years in Cambodia...so many times I thought to myself what the fuck am I doing here?
For me I do, and can and never go back to west...just go to other so called cool "shitholes in Asia".
Before you post,I am not talking about Western style Asia. Not going to explain myself here. If you don't get,it forget it.
Many times I felt living in Cambodia was wrong for me and my family. However on this sailing trip I feel it's the last sanctum of freedom almost left in Asia.
My point is...leave, and look at the rest of South East Asia before you winge how bad it is.
IMO. Chill out out and have a good real revelation and a remember why we are really there.
Marv
When I was here I wanted to be there!

You've found where you and your family are happy Marvin. That's a great thing. We have met and I think you're in your forties. You're lucky. Sometimes it takes people much longer to find true happiness.
Good on you mate.

Yeah, I can understand that people always want something that may lay beyond the horizon. I think you have a great outlook dude. Sail on.

its rare to find a place that suits all your needs and wants,i was lucky to be raised near the coast,we had 7 beautiful quite beaches within 7km of my home plus a huge lake and river system, can remember building rafts and floating shacks on the lake, now i go back and see just all houses and sub divisions.when i came into siem reap as a tourist and visited the floating village here,i was hooked, line and sinker:)the tonle sap lake is raw and underdeveloped, some of the villages have no road access,i am spending more and more time out on the lake.

Oh admit it, Marvin, you miss me.Marvin wrote:My point is...leave, and look at the rest of South East Asia before you winge how bad it is.
Took the family to Vietnam for a week or so once, no real complaints, but the people are much warmer here (especially with the heatwave we've been having)
Tbh, I would prefer Kampong Cham, but this is where I am, so make the best of it. One thing the heatwave taught me is that whining just makes it worse, constant stream from the students about hot classrooms.

Also, are you keen on the idea of breaking bread with Gregory M. Blake, BSc (Hons) ?

Exactly.
I'm in Chiang Rai now and met some decent settled ex pats who haven't whinged one bit about the place but they do go on about other places. The last time I landed in Siem Reap from Palawan Island (a beautiful place) the first thought I had was 'ahh, it's good to be back' ...which stunned me somewhat. All good.

Never mind.

I like Cambodia but don't see it as the Shangri-La others seem to and since leaving a few years ago have no real desire to return any time soon. It's certainly an easy place to live; rent, food, beer and other entertainment is certainly very cheap. But I think the overall topography of the country is probably the least interesting of any country in S.E.Asia. The people are generally nice enough in a harmless/gormless kind of way and my experience of them certainly doesn't fit neatly with the daily reports of rape, murder and grotesque violence reported in the press. The weather is pretty dreadful save for three months or so around Christmas. Plenty of interesting people in Phnom Penh to socialise with(can't really speak for Sihanoukville/Siem Reap as only visited each three or four times) and reports of huge amounts of down-and-outs, drunks, pant-sniffers and junkies are greatly exaggerated, IMO.
But overall... meh. It's OK. No more, no less.

Somebody should write a world travel book titled - ''Lovely Shitholes'' and sell it to Lonely Planet.
It could even contain a rating system of thumbs up for - down-and-outs, sexpats, drunks, pant-sniffers and junkies.
PS, i thought Marvin had a yacht? Surely if he want's to be here, there or basically anywhere, then all he needs is abit of wind?

I lived there before in town, next to the old Mekong Crossing. Sticks would be fine...Stagger Lee wrote:Kg Cham - for real ?!... Close to town, or out in the sticks ?vladimir wrote: Tbh, I would prefer Kampong Cham.

I'd sit down with GMB, or any person, basically. (caveat: only 2 or 3 exceptions)
