Metred tuktuks in Phnom Penh
I was wandering around BKK1 this morning and spotted this at the corner of 63 and 310. I've never seen one of these before; It looks like the tuk tuks they have in the Indian subcontinent.
Interestingly, it seems to be metered and has a published tariff.
Has anyone else seen these?

There are scores of this style tuk tuk around, but I've never seen a metered one.

I've seen it (at least one) around and it has an identification number so I guess there are more of them and they may be in the same company, group or association.
Didn't try them yet, but if they do have a proper meter, that may prove to be more attractive to expats and tourists who are just given a flat USD3 to go anywhere in the Riverside area.
In comparison, for a 14.3 km trip to get home, the fare with a metered taxi was KHR46-47,000, that's about KHR3,250/km.

1,200 riel per km is very cheap - you could get to the airport for about $3.
I wonder if that's per person.

Haha, dwarf discrimination at it's finest.
slavedog, I was just calculating the fare to Pochentong, you had better see your shrink...

How much would it be? I believe the airport is around 8km from the city centre. That would be 9600 riel. With tip wouldn't that be around $3? It looks fucking uncomfortable though, and I wouldn't like to bet my pension on them turning up to pick me up when i called them using that number.vladimir wrote:Haha, dwarf discrimination at it's finest.

Have not seen a metered one either, but more and more of these around PP.
These are used in Sri Lanka and have an amazing ability for a 360 degree turn near on the spot.
They are comfortable.

Obviously I included a dollar tip. For you, if you walk the last 300 yards, two bucks will cover it.

Seen them on 294 as well, but have yet to use.
Will there be a minimum amount? Like other taxis do, charge x amount just for getting in?

I've seen them around Aeon, Norodum, and Monivong. I thought it was one guy getting around and then I saw 4 or 5 all at the same time. I passed one chock full of Khmers so I can't imagine it's per person.
These tuk tuks are from India, made by Baja, I was told they cost USD 2.450 all included. The engine runs on LPG, so they're pretty clean and run pretty cheap since a full tank (15.000r) will give the driver well over 100 km. Another good thing is the wheels on the back of this machine actually have brakes. The downside is inside they're much smaller than the usual Khmer tuk tuk. The meter might be questionable... Where did it come from, who set it, who checked it.....
But no doubt machines like this will make the 'old style tuk tuk' eventually disappear from the streets.

Only for about the past 2 or 3 months. You must not leave your apartment pool too often?alanclarke72 wrote:I was wandering around BKK1 this morning and spotted this at the corner of 63 and 310. I've never seen one of these before; It looks like the tuk tuks they have in the Indian subcontinent.
